Police say a car has hit an Australian lawmaker, critically injuring her; the driver was arrested
MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — A car hit an Australian federal independent lawmaker on Monday, critically injuring her in an apparently deliberate attack, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said. The driver was arrested. Helen Haines, 65, was struck by a Toyota Land Cruiser SUV outside her electoral district office midafternoon in the city of Wangaratta in Victoria state, police said. Albanese said the national counterterrorism team, incorporating police and intelligence agencies, was investigating. “This wasn’t an accident. There was a deliberate act, it would appear. We don’t know what the motivation is,” Albanese told the Australian Broadcasting Corp. The 43-year-old driver was arrested at the scene by a passerby. He will be interviewed in relation to the incident, police said. “A knife was located by police and seized from inside the Toyota,” police said. “At this stage, police are investigating as to whether this was an intentional act.”Haines, who was first elected to the Parliament in 2019, was taken to a hospital with critical injuries, police said.

Russian missiles and drones hit Kyiv overnight, killing 1 and injuring 8
Vital US supplies are running late, Zelensky saysZelensky said detrimental speed limits are still in place on Kyiv’s use of the military-grade version of U. S. company SpaceX’s satellite internet service. Full service was being restored at the end of last week, but Zelenskyy said Monday that speed restrictions are still slowing down Ukraine’s drones at points along the front line. Also, a severe shortage of American-made Patriot air defense systems has made Ukraine more vulnerable. Delays are still occurring with some “vital supplies” from the U. S., Zelensky said without elaborating, and senior Kyiv officials are urgently contacting other countries to help strengthen air defenses. Western intelligence sharing has helped Ukraine counter Russia’s devastating ballistic missiles and hold back Moscow’s invasion, which began more than 4½ years ago. U. S. President Donald Trump says Washington hasn’t stopped providing intelligence to Kyiv. Secretary of State Marco Rubio repeated that position Monday, saying he had no information about the previous night’s Russian attack.
