Researchers have demonstrated programmable quantum operations using a 20-meter multimode fiber, a distance previously limiting for maintaining quantum coherence. The work overcomes challenges posed by modal dispersion by harnessing ultra-long coherence from a warm 87Rb atomic ensemble to generate heralded single photons.
The experimental setup relies on three key stages, beginning with the generation of heralded single photons via spontaneous four-wave mixing (SFWM) within the 87Rb atomic vapor cell, a process where pump and coupling lasers excite atoms to produce correlated photon pairs. These photons are then spatially filtered and coupled into single-mode fibers, forming the foundation for quantum information processing.

NIST Researchers Supersize Quantum Technology to Help Detect Faint Photons - National Institute of Standards and Technology (.gov)
In this illustration, photons hit a strip of superconducting wire, disrupting the electric current and registering an electric pulse. Each pulse tells researchers about the light that has hit the detector, which is beneficial for applications like biomedical imaging and astronomy. Our everyday life is flooded with photons, the quantum building blocks of light. For cutting-edge technology, from quantum computing to deep-tissue imaging, detecting every single photon counts. “Photons carry information,” said Kristen Parzuchowski, a postdoctoral researcher at the National Institute of Standards and Technology. “Whenever a photon comes into your measurement system, you need to be able to detect it.”Photons can transmit data in quantum networks or across deep space communication links. Catching and analyzing photons lets scientists build biomedical images and search the universe for dark matter. Superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors (SNSPDs) are the best way to capture photons for all these applications. As their name implies, they use the phenomenon of superconductivity, in which electricity flows without resistance, to detect individual photons.

Introducing: Yema Spacegraf Heure Siderale Tourbillon Volant Millesime 2026 - Monochrome Watches
Yema’s Millésime series represents the most elaborate example of its watchmaking ambitions, offering French manufacturing and complications rarely encountered at this price level, in limited production series. Following last year’s Superman Tourbillon Millésime CMM.31, the brand introduces a very different creation for 2026, potentially its most ambitious to date: the Spacegraf Heure Sidérale Tourbillon Volant. Here, Yema pairs a tourbillon regulator with a celestial display inspired by the astronomical observations that helped establish Besançon as a centre of French watchmaking. It’s a connection that goes back to 1878, when the Besançon Observatory was created to help local watchmakers regulate their timepieces through astronomical observations. The Spacegraf Heure Sidérale Tourbillon Volant is housed in a 42mm Grade 5 titanium case measuring 12.15mm thick. The curved case exhibits a variety of contrasting brushed finishes and some polished accents. Sharp angles define the lugs, while the double-domed sapphire crystal tops the case. The fluted 3 o’clock crown features the Yema logo. The sapphire crystal caseback offers a clear view of the movement. Water resistance is 100m.

EA Sports Confirms Return of Fight Night Boxing Games - RG.org
(Photo by Justin Sullivan/Getty Images)EA Sports announced Tuesday that its Fight Night boxing video game franchise will return, ending a long break for a series that has not released a new instalment since 2011. The announcement came through a newly created EA Sports Fight Night social media account. “To everyone who stayed in our corner: Fight Night is coming back,” the post read. The accompanying image showed a pair of boxing gloves hanging above a ring with the line “The fight is never over.”EA did not reveal a title, platforms, a release window, gameplay details or which studio is developing the game. No trailer was released with the announcement. The most recent game in the series, Fight Night Champion, was released in 2011. EA has since focused its combat sports efforts on its EA Sports UFC series, and fighters including Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua have appeared in those games. Return Follows Earlier Reports of Cancelled PlansInsider Gaming reported in September that an earlier plan to revive Fight Night had been cancelled about a year ago.

Leica’s U.S. boss says F1 'goes at incredible speed' and photography helps 'stop the moment.' Now they’ve made $10,000 camera together - Fortune
Some of Formula 1’s most populat drivers are already serious about photography. Lewis Hamilton and Lando Norris have both been seen with Leica cameras, and Norris runs a separate Instagram account for his photos. That overlap goes well past the drivers, or even the intricate pieces that goes into both cars and cameras, says Mike Giannattasio, president of Leica Camera North America.
