Loblaw CEO Per Bank says discount stores now key to winning price-weary shoppers

Published: October 25, 2026 at 6:14a.m. EDTTORONTO — Narrow aisles, fewer shelves, and plenty of house-brand items: this Loblaw store feels cosier but still offers enough variety for a grocery run. Loblaw’s Danish chief executive, Per Bank, brought a little bit of Europe with him three years ago when he moved here to run the country’s largest grocery chain. “Small discount stores ... I would probably say that’s some of the things I brought to Canada,” Bank said, sitting in the backroom of a small-scale Toronto No Frills on a brisk October morning. In its smaller 5,000-product stores, Loblaw has done away with the deli counters, live pizza stations and fresh bakeries typical of its conventional banners — and shoppers aren’t complaining. While discount stores aren’t a new phenomenon, Loblaw’s transition into a quick in-and-out shopping experience at its discount banners, No Frills and Maxi, has taken it up a notch. Now, many of its discount banners are downsized into something more like a corner store. When he took the helm, Bank said the company had about 43 small-format stores under 20,000 sq. ft. Today, there are more than 75 across the country with an intentional strategy.

Why P.E.I. students face tuition hikes more than double the national average

Published: October 25, 2026 at 6:00a.m. EDTCHARLOTTETOWN - The halls are busy at the University of Prince Edward Island but for some students staying in school is getting harder to afford. Students from P. E. I. experienced the largest increase in tuition fees this school year, up 4.9 per cent, according to Statistics Canada’s latest Consumer Price Index. That’s more than double the national average of 2.4 per cent. The Island also had the highest annual inflation rate of any province in September, at 5.7 per cent. “The students don’t know if they’re going to be able to pay for education next year. They don’t know if they’re going to continue studying,” said Alissa Sonomura Cyrino, vice-president external of the University of Prince Edward Island Student Union. “There’s a lot of pressure.”Cyrino says students have faced three straight years of steep tuition hikes, including back-to-back increases of up to 6.5 per cent for domestic students. The student union is raising concerns that repeated spikes risk discouraging students from low-income and middle-income households from pursuing higher education.

Sturko became leader of the new CentreBC party on the day the writ dropped for the election. Over the next weeks, she campaigned as an alternative for voters who felt the Conservatives and NDP were too extreme.
