Carney ‘disappointed’ in Hoekstra’s foreign interference allegations

ISTANBUL/OTTAWA -- Prime Minister Mark Carney said he is “disappointed” in ongoing allegations from U. S. Ambassador to Canada Pete Hoekstra, who is accusing Canadian politicians of interfering in the upcoming U. S. midterm elections. “There is no merit to these claims, so I’ll call it out that way,” Carney said while speaking to reporters in Istanbul on Friday. “I’m disappointed that their envoy sees that it’s his role to make these suggestions.”Carney added that Canada is “very careful” to make sure the country “not be seen to” interfere and referenced Canada’s “deep diplomatic presence” in the United States. Earlier this month, Hoekstra warned Canadian leaders to stay out of American politics while speaking to “The Really Big Show” podcast and accused several Canadian politicians, including Industry Minister Mélanie Joly, of meddling in close U. S. midterm races. The U. S. Embassy to Canada, meanwhile, released a fact sheet this week outlining alleged instances of foreign interference in 2025 and 2026, pointing to Joly along with Ontario Premier Doug Ford and Liberal MP Anthony Housefather.

The Kremlin says a first tanker of Russian diesel sets sail for the U.S. despite Ukraine’s protests

Published: October 23, 2026 at 8:02a.m. EDTA first tanker carrying Russian diesel to the United States under a new import agreement has set sail, the Kremlin said Friday, two weeks after U. S. President Donald Trump said he struck a deal with President Vladimir Putin despite Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine. “The first oil tanker has sailed off to customers, and regular supplies will continue,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said without elaborating. Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak said earlier this week that the first shipment would amount to 40,000 tons of diesel, according to Russia’s Interfax news agency. Marine intelligence firm Kpler said the vessel was signaling it was headed to New York to arrive Nov. 7 and would be the first Russian diesel delivery to the United States since July 2023. The abrupt reversal of U. S. sanctions policy on Russia over its invasion of its neighbour was seen as an attempt by Trump to address high fuel prices ahead of the midterm elections. The diesel shipment of 40,000 tons amounts to around 300,000 barrels, or about 7 per cent of the roughly 4 million barrels of diesel the U. S. economy consumes in a single day.

Advocates flag contributions, not costs, of newcomers in Alberta referendum aftermath

Published: October 23, 2026 at 7:43a.m. EDTAlberta's Premier addressed the province after early results from Monday's referendum showed a majority were in favour of staying in Canada. CALGARY — A union representative for a beef processing plant south of Calgary is warning of worsening labour shortages if immigration policy proposals that narrowly passed in Alberta’s referendum are enacted. “These are tough and high turnover jobs with few candidates lining up to fill them,” said Faduma Ahmed, with the United Food and Commercial Workers Local 401 at Cargill’s abattoir in High River, Alta. With 98 per cent of polls reporting in Monday’s referendum, a slim majority of votes were cast in favour of limiting access to or charging a fee for provincially funded services based on immigration status. Premier Danielle Smith’s government had argued that the cost to provide health care and education to temporary Alberta residents amounts to $1 billion a year and that a surge in newcomers has strained affordability and services. But critics have warned that the referendum’s outcome could make Alberta less attractive to newcomers at a time when jobs desperately need to be filled.
