Five ways El Niño is affecting the weather around the world - BBC
In the eastern Pacific, where El Niño tends to strengthen hurricane activity, it has been a very active season so far. There have been 22 named storms and 12 hurricanes, including 10 major hurricanes. This is already above the number that would typically develop in the whole of an average season, with two months left to go until its end. Here, El Niño provides the ingredients of higher ocean temperatures and weaker winds high in the atmosphere, making it easier for storms to gain strength. Hurricane Polo is one such example of this. The hurricane experienced rapid intensification, producing wind gusts of 180 mph (285 kmh), fueled by the very warm waters produced by El Niño. Polo was also one of three hurricanes churning away in the same basin at the same time, along with Odalys and Nolo. Moreover, it has happened twice now in the space of a month. Earlier in September, the energy produced by exceptional ocean heat resulted in three simultaneous hurricanes in the central and eastern Pacific: Lowell, Karina and Marie. Until this year, the last time there had been three Pacific hurricanes at the same time was 2015. In contrast, the Atlantic Ocean has remained eerily quiet.

Zelenskyy says Ukraine given no early warning from allies as Russia strikes energy targets - CBC
Russia launched new attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure using ballistic missiles and jet-powered drones, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Monday, adding that Kyiv again received no early warning of the attack from partner countries that previously shared their intelligence. Zelenskyy is grappling with recent Washington moves benefitting Russian President Vladimir Putin, including waiving U. S. sanctions on Moscow and signing a deal to import diesel from Moscow. Moscow and Kyiv, meanwhile, were discussing the possible evacuation of the Russian-occupied front-line city of Oleshky in the southern Kherson region, where about 2,000 people have been cut off from food and medical supplies for months, according to a Ukrainian human rights official. Zelenskyy said speed restrictions are still in place on Kyiv's use of the military-grade version of U. S. company SpaceX's satellite internet service. Full service was being restored at the end of last week, but Zelenskyy said Monday that the restrictions are still slowing Ukraine's drones along the front. People carry their belongings with them, after leaving their office in Kyiv, following a Russian air attack on Monday.

Oregon man who killed school shooter reportedly took part in military drills with Iraq veterans - The Guardian
New details are emerging about the parent who fatally shot the 16-year-old shooter who killed three children and a teacher in Oregon last week. In a 2018 Facebook post, Kaylub Giamanco, the 36-year-old carpenter who shot and killed the shooter, said he had gone through “military shooting drills” with veterans who fought in Iraq. In addition to the four people killed, the shooting in Bend left a seven-year old student in hospital, receiving “lifesaving care”, and 54-year-old teacher Becky Drury with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. The shooter, 16-year-old Griffin J John II, first opened fire outside the school with a shotgun, aiming at a driver who tried to confront him. He then shot through locked doors, forcing entry on to the elementary school campus. Giamanco, who has two daughters at the school, was driving back from his lunch break when he heard gunfire coming from the campus. He parked his car near the building, took a legally registered 40-caliber pistol from his vehicle and raced inside, according to Bend police. Before his arrival, a teacher threw a cellphone at the assailant and tackled him, and tried to wrestle the gun from his hands.
