Seven killed and 40 injured after gunmen open fire at church funeral in Jordan - The Guardian
Gunmen opened fire during a funeral at a church in Jordan on Friday, killing seven people and wounding 40 others, authorities said. The shooting took place at a Greek Orthodox church in Karak, about 180km (110 miles) south of the capital, Amman. Footage broadcast on Jordanian state television showed two gunmen who appear to be holding pistols approaching the church and firing shots. A third man who appears to be holding a semiautomatic rifle then approaches and opens fire, and all three then run toward the church. Video footage taken by witnesses shows broken glass and pools of blood on the floor of the church. Dorgham Halasa, who was among the mourners inside the church, said intense gunfire erupted 15 minutes after the funeral had started, and then people started running. “It was a weird situation, and heavy gunfire,” Halasa said. He did not see the gunmen, but said other people reported seeing four of them. The Associated Press could not independently verify the number of assailants, and Jordan’s security services did not immediately release details.

Father who killed Oregon school shooter speaks out for first time: ‘I have to go in’ - The Guardian
The Oregon father hailed as a hero for stopping a school shooting last week spoke for the first time about the incident, describing his experience and how he told a 911 operator: “I have to go in. People are going to die.”Kaylub Giamanco, a 36-year-old carpenter, has received national attention and praise for stopping the bloodshed at Silver Rail elementary in Bend, Oregon, where his children attend school. He fatally shot Griffin J John II, a 16-year-old former student at the school, who broke in and shot six people, killing Megan Lambert, a 25-year-old teacher, and three children, including five-year-old Rhoam Summer. In an interview with Oregon Public Broadcasting (OPB), his first since the 15 October shooting, he recounted that day. He told reporters that he was only in the area because he had decided to return home and eat lunch with his wife rather than the meal he brought to work that day. For a moment, Giamanco, who lives near the school, thought it was a prank when he saw a man in black armed with a gun headed toward Silver Rail, he said. Then he saw the man fire the gun and climb over a school fence.

Ruins of Limoges city hall a symbol of France divided by national protests - BBC
5 hours agoJames WaterhouseParis Correspondent, Limoges, southwest-central France"It is a historical tragedy for France, not just Limoges". Just six months into his mayoral term, it is hard to imagine Guillaume Guérin having a more momentous week. We talk next to what became the defining image of last week's nationwide protests: the still impressive, yet fragile exterior of his town's 19th-Century town hall, charred from a fire. The sight of its wooden clock tower collapsing into the flames drew widespread shock and anger, and Guérin, who was in tears when he first saw the scale of the damage this week, believes the reaction is "legitimate and completely understandable". Getty ImagesLimoges city hall was set on fire last weekend with its wooden clock tower collapsing on Saturday What is apparent from the array of flowers and sombre onlookers gathered at the hall's entrance, is that this is a town mourning the loss, or at the least the harm inflicted on its most iconic and, frankly, most beautiful building. Guérin blames the damage on the French hard left, "supported by rioters". Two men have been arrested, a 66-year-old, as well as another suspect who is 34.

Student movement takes Serbia's Vučić to the wire in neck-and-neck election - BBC
1 hour agoGuy Delauneyin BelgradeGuy Delauney/BBCThe Student List is Number 3 on Serbia's ballot paper, so the figure seen being hugged by this supporter has become a symbol of the movement's fight for changeIf Sunday's parliamentary elections really are a battle for the heart of Serbia, then who better than a cardiologist to be one of the leading figures in the race. Ilija Srdanović appears an unlikely opponent for Serbia's long-serving leader, Aleksandar Vučić, arriving for an interview by motorbike sporting a fluorescent yellow jacket emblazoned with pro-student slogans. He has been selected as top candidate for an opposition movement posing the most serious challenge to Vučić since the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) entered government in 2012. The Student List has emerged from almost two years of anti-corruption protests led by young Serbians, outraged by the deaths of 16 people when a railway station's canopy collapsed in Serbia's second city Novi Sad.
