Alligator kills 71-year-old man fishing in Florida - BBC

5 hours agoGrace Eliza GoodwinA 71-year-old man has been killed by an alligator while fishing in a park in central Florida, police have said. The man was fishing near Lake Apopka in the town of Winter Garden when the 3.7m (12ft) alligator came up to the shoreline and attacked him, police captain Michael Mason said on Friday night. The attack happened at around 17:00 local time (22:00 BST) on Friday in Dr Bradford Memorial Park, a few miles west of Orlando. Alligator attacks in Florida are relatively rare, despite a population of about 1.3 million across the state, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC). "Lake Apopka has tonnes of alligators in it, so that's not uncommon to see alligators in this part of town at all," Mason said. Getty ImagesThe alligator population of Florida has remained steady for many years (file photo)The alligator was "removed as a danger to the public" and "dispatched" by trappers, he said. "Always be aware of your surroundings, always be safe. Local wildlife - respect it, keep your distance," Mason said. "It looks like it's docile, it looks like your Florida emblem, but it can be dangerous.

Map Reveals Where Drought To Worsen As El Niño To Shape Winter - Newsweek

Drought conditions could develop or worsen for parts of the northwestern U. S. in the coming months, as meteorologists expect El Niño to help shape the winter season. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) issued its winter outlook this week. In it, the agency outlined how the climate pattern could influence temperature and rainfall during winter and said drought conditions are favored to develop or worsen across parts of the northern Rockies. What Is El Niño? El Niño is a naturally recurring climate pattern associated with warmer waters in the Pacific that can influence temperatures and rainfall worldwide. In the U. S., typical El Niño effects can include stormier weather across southern regions, drier conditions in some northern areas and changes in hurricane activity. The Climate Prediction Center said earlier this month that El Niño had continued to strengthen, with chances remaining high for a “strong-to-very strong” event through January to March 2027.

WOAH Warns of Sharp Rise in Vector-Borne Disease Reports - Vet Candy

New global surveillance data reveal dramatic increases in reported bluetongue and West Nile fever events, raising concerns about climate change, expanding disease territories, and the future of animal health. The world's disease map is changing, and veterinarians are being urged to pay attention. From biting midges carrying bluetongue virus across Europe to mosquitoes spreading West Nile fever, vector-borne diseases are emerging in new regions, creating growing challenges for animal health professionals, livestock producers, and public health officials. The World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) issued a warning on October 9, 2026, calling for stronger disease surveillance, earlier detection, and better international cooperation as reports of several vector-borne diseases continue to climb. An analysis of information submitted through the World Animal Health Information System (WAHIS) reveals a particularly striking increase in reported exceptional epidemiological events since 2023. The findings suggest that shifting environmental conditions, changing vector populations, and animal movements are reshaping where certain infectious diseases can spread.

Elon Musk is pouring money into the midterms. Here's where he's giving the most. - Business Insider

Elon Musk, seen here with President Donald Trump last month, is bankrolling Republican campaigns. Elon Musk is forking over generational wealth to Republicans facing tough midterm elections this cycle. Over two donations in September, Musk gave a combined $158 million to the Senate Leadership Fund, a super PAC aligned with Senate Republicans, which has, in turn, given reams of cash to funds supporting the Republican candidate in Texas. The money, shown in new federal disclosure forms, cements Musk as a major player in Republican politics over a year after he publicly split with President Donald Trump over the latter's handling of the Epstein files (though the two have since reconciled). Republicans are facing serious headwinds over the Iran war, rising inflation, and sky-high gas prices. Polls show that American voters are largely dissatisfied with Trump's leadership and handling of the economy. All told, Musk has given about $276 million since July. Much of Musk's political donations have ended up in Texas, according to federal disclosure forms, where embattled Attorney General Ken Paxton is engaged in a mudslinging battle for the Senate with state representative James Talarico.

Quebec author abandons effort to document novel’s origins amid AI allegations - Global News

Quebec author Thélyson Orélien has abandoned efforts to compile evidence supporting his denial that artificial intelligence was used to write his novel, his publisher has confirmed. The decision ends an effort previously disclosed by his publisher, Éditions du Boréal, to document how “C’était ça ou mourir,” which translates to “It was either that or dying,” was written, leaving questions about whether AI was used to write the novel unresolved even as the publisher continues to sell it. In an email to The Canadian Press, Éditions du Boréal provided comments attributed to its co-director, Renaud Roussel, confirming that Orélien decided to end the effort. “The publishing house supported him in this process, which he chose to end,” Roussel said. “That decision is his to make, and we accept it, although we certainly would have preferred to be able to provide definitive answers to the allegations of AI use against him.” Story continues below advertisement

Antarctica’s frozen ocean looks like a giant work of art - Earth.com

A new ESA satellite image reveals vast stretches of Antarctic sea ice, with enormous ice floes and swirling patterns near the Antarctic Peninsula. Today’s Image of the Day from the European Space Agency (ESA) reveals a vast landscape of sea ice in West Antarctica as winter comes to an end. From space, the waters surrounding Antarctica look like an enormous patchwork of white ice and dark ocean. Some areas appear almost solid, while others contain countless fragments drifting across the sea. The image was captured by the Copernicus Sentinel-3 satellite on September 30, 2026. It reveals a striking landscape near the Antarctic Peninsula, where winter sea ice has spread across the surrounding waters. The image also captures a seasonal turning point. Winter is ending in the Southern Hemisphere, and Antarctica’s sea ice has likely reached its greatest extent of the year. Antarctica at the end of winterUnlike the thick ice sheets covering Antarctica’s land, sea ice forms when ocean water freezes. It expands during the cold winter months and retreats as temperatures rise during spring and summer. This annual cycle transforms millions of square kilometers of the Southern Ocean.

Designing Clinical Trials for Real-World Access - Targeted Oncology

Rethink trial design with decentralized, community-based models to cut barriers, let patients enroll closer to home, and preserve high-quality safety data. Making clinical trials more accessible requires rethinking how studies are designed, supported, and conducted, particularly for patients receiving care in community settings. In an interview with Targeted Oncology, Krish Patel, MD, executive director of hematologic cancer research at Sarah Cannon Research Institute, discusses the role of trial sponsors, research organizations, community oncology sites, and regulatory agencies in reducing barriers to participation. Patel emphasizes that while community oncology sites may have varying capabilities, they care for a large proportion of patients who could benefit from clinical trial participation. He argues that stakeholders should reassess which traditional trial requirements are truly necessary to determine whether a therapy is safe and effective and which may create unnecessary barriers for patients and sites. One potential solution is greater use of decentralized trial models.

James Cameron congratulates Avengers: Endgame's box office success with bonkers image - A.V. Club

Marvel Studios’ release of Avengers: Endgame: Encore was a shrewd gambit for a few reasons: It put the studio’s most successful film back in conversation right after the juggernaut success of Spider-Man: Brand New Day; it tided die-hards over with new footage ahead of December’s Avengers: Doomsday; and, perhaps most importantly, it raked in an additional $138 million for the film, reinstating its position as the worldwide box office champion over James Cameron’s Avatar. Cameron, who certainly doesn’t spend his precious time fretting about such matters as lifetime financial grosses and being the best in the world at stuff, recently expressed his congratulations to Marvel for once again overtaking his 2009 sci-fi film. “You are one of the people,” the director wrote (per The Wrap) in a composite image from Avatar, with Iron Man at the center of a welcoming Na’vi tribe. “Congratulations to Marvel and the #1 Avengers: Endgame: Encore for bringing moviegoers to the cinemas! – Jim Cameron.”

The Minnesota Wild and Montreal Canadiens have been going hard after Larkin of late, so don't be surprised to see one of these two teams win the sweepstakes.

Radiation Omission in Favorable Breast Cancer Hinges on Endocrine Adherence - CancerNetwork

Leah Katz, MD, MPH, discusses long-term IDEA trial data on omitting radiation and why endocrine therapy tolerance matters in this decision. In an interview with CancerNetwork® at the 2026 American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) Annual Meeting, Leah Katz, MD, MPH, vice chair of Faculty Development and an attending radiation oncologist in the Department of Radiation Oncology at the University of Miami Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine, discussed long-term follow-up from the prospective, single-arm phase 2 IDEA trial (NCT02400190). Katz served as the discussant for the breast cancer Science Highlights session at the meeting. The trial enrolled 200 postmenopausal patients aged 50 to 69 years with biologically favorable, stage I, estrogen receptor–positive, HER2-negative breast cancer and a 21-gene recurrence score of 18 or lower who received endocrine therapy without radiotherapy after breast-conserving surgery. At a median follow-up of 7.93 years, freedom from recurrence was 99% at 5 years and 94% at 8 years, and most ipsilateral breast events occurred after 5 years.
