Elon Musk, seen here with President Donald Trump last month, is bankrolling Republican campaigns.
Elon Musk is forking over generational wealth to Republicans facing tough midterm elections this cycle. Over two donations in September, Musk gave a combined $158 million to the Senate Leadership Fund, a super PAC aligned with Senate Republicans, which has, in turn, given reams of cash to funds supporting the Republican candidate in Texas. The money, shown in new federal disclosure forms, cements Musk as a major player in Republican politics over a year after he publicly split with President Donald Trump over the latter's handling of the Epstein files (though the two have since reconciled). Republicans are facing serious headwinds over the Iran war, rising inflation, and sky-high gas prices. Polls show that American voters are largely dissatisfied with Trump's leadership and handling of the economy. All told, Musk has given about $276 million since July. Much of Musk's political donations have ended up in Texas, according to federal disclosure forms, where embattled Attorney General Ken Paxton is engaged in a mudslinging battle for the Senate with state representative James Talarico.

Quebec author Thélyson Orélien has abandoned efforts to compile evidence supporting his denial that artificial intelligence was used to write his novel, his publisher has confirmed.
The decision ends an effort previously disclosed by his publisher, Éditions du Boréal, to document how “C’était ça ou mourir,” which translates to “It was either that or dying,” was written, leaving questions about whether AI was used to write the novel unresolved even as the publisher continues to sell it. In an email to The Canadian Press, Éditions du Boréal provided comments attributed to its co-director, Renaud Roussel, confirming that Orélien decided to end the effort. “The publishing house supported him in this process, which he chose to end,” Roussel said. “That decision is his to make, and we accept it, although we certainly would have preferred to be able to provide definitive answers to the allegations of AI use against him.” Story continues below advertisement
A new ESA satellite image reveals vast stretches of Antarctic sea ice, with enormous ice floes and swirling patterns near the Antarctic Peninsula. Today’s Image of the Day from the European Space Agency (ESA) reveals a vast landscape of sea ice in West Antarctica as winter comes to an end. From space, the waters surrounding Antarctica look like an enormous patchwork of white ice and dark ocean. Some areas appear almost solid, while others contain countless fragments drifting across the sea. The image was captured by the Copernicus Sentinel-3 satellite on September 30, 2026. It reveals a striking landscape near the Antarctic Peninsula, where winter sea ice has spread across the surrounding waters. The image also captures a seasonal turning point. Winter is ending in the Southern Hemisphere, and Antarctica’s sea ice has likely reached its greatest extent of the year. Antarctica at the end of winterUnlike the thick ice sheets covering Antarctica’s land, sea ice forms when ocean water freezes. It expands during the cold winter months and retreats as temperatures rise during spring and summer. This annual cycle transforms millions of square kilometers of the Southern Ocean.
Rethink trial design with decentralized, community-based models to cut barriers, let patients enroll closer to home, and preserve high-quality safety data. Making clinical trials more accessible requires rethinking how studies are designed, supported, and conducted, particularly for patients receiving care in community settings. In an interview with Targeted Oncology, Krish Patel, MD, executive director of hematologic cancer research at Sarah Cannon Research Institute, discusses the role of trial sponsors, research organizations, community oncology sites, and regulatory agencies in reducing barriers to participation. Patel emphasizes that while community oncology sites may have varying capabilities, they care for a large proportion of patients who could benefit from clinical trial participation. He argues that stakeholders should reassess which traditional trial requirements are truly necessary to determine whether a therapy is safe and effective and which may create unnecessary barriers for patients and sites. One potential solution is greater use of decentralized trial models.
Marvel Studios’ release of Avengers: Endgame: Encore was a shrewd gambit for a few reasons: It put the studio’s most successful film back in conversation right after the juggernaut success of Spider-Man: Brand New Day; it tided die-hards over with new footage ahead of December’s Avengers: Doomsday; and, perhaps most importantly, it raked in an additional $138 million for the film, reinstating its position as the worldwide box office champion over James Cameron’s Avatar. Cameron, who certainly doesn’t spend his precious time fretting about such matters as lifetime financial grosses and being the best in the world at stuff, recently expressed his congratulations to Marvel for once again overtaking his 2009 sci-fi film.
“You are one of the people,” the director wrote (per The Wrap) in a composite image from Avatar, with Iron Man at the center of a welcoming Na’vi tribe. “Congratulations to Marvel and the #1 Avengers: Endgame: Encore for bringing moviegoers to the cinemas! – Jim Cameron.”
It's starting to sound like Dylan Larkin will be getting his wish, as reports have surfaced the Detroit Red Wings are closing in on finalizing a trade. Larkin is expected to be dealt within the next week. John Buccigross on Frankly Hockey about the Red Wings: I think there's gooing be a trade within 7 to 10 days in Detroit. I got a little bit of information last night which tells me that we're going to see a trade[...] Seravalli: It has to be Larkin, right?. Buccigross: Yeah, Larkin. Growing Pains: McKenna benched, Buium struggling, Levshunov shining? - Oct. 16, 2026 - Frankly Hockey with @Buccigross https://t.co/1z87xpO39j— Frank Seravalli (@frank_seravalli) October 16, 2026
Buccigross mentioned to Frank Seravalli on Friday that he's received information on a Larkin trade. Where exactly he winds up, is anyone's guess at this point. Multiple reports have stated that Larkin is open to a trade to up to 12 teams, but prefers a situation where he can be on a Stanley Cup contender this season. The Minnesota Wild and Montreal Canadiens have been going hard after Larkin of late, so don't be surprised to see one of these two teams win the sweepstakes.
Leah Katz, MD, MPH, discusses long-term IDEA trial data on omitting radiation and why endocrine therapy tolerance matters in this decision. In an interview with CancerNetwork® at the 2026 American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) Annual Meeting, Leah Katz, MD, MPH, vice chair of Faculty Development and an attending radiation oncologist in the Department of Radiation Oncology at the University of Miami Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine, discussed long-term follow-up from the prospective, single-arm phase 2 IDEA trial (NCT02400190). Katz served as the discussant for the breast cancer Science Highlights session at the meeting. The trial enrolled 200 postmenopausal patients aged 50 to 69 years with biologically favorable, stage I, estrogen receptor–positive, HER2-negative breast cancer and a 21-gene recurrence score of 18 or lower who received endocrine therapy without radiotherapy after breast-conserving surgery. At a median follow-up of 7.93 years, freedom from recurrence was 99% at 5 years and 94% at 8 years, and most ipsilateral breast events occurred after 5 years.

Barry Sloane, the actor behind Call of Duty's Captain Price, has shared a message with fans as praise for Modern Warfare 4's campaign rolls in. Early reactions to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4's story mode have filled social media feeds in the first 24 hours since early access players dived in – and most of them seem to be quite positive. Fans online have called it one of the more "brutal" and "intense" campaigns the series has ever seen, with many going as far as to say it holds its own against classic stories featured in games like the original Modern Warfare 2 and Black Ops. It appears to be a winner for publisher Activision and developer Infinity Ward that critics like, too. While Steam reviews paint a "Very Positive" picture, IGN awarded this year's set of story missions an 8/10. Our reviewer said the Modern Warfare 4 campaign made them "feel something for the series again," adding that it managed to send the reboot saga series out "on a high note. ""The MW4 campaign was a 10/10 for me, they made a good story and ended it," one recent Steam review said.

SaTScan detects an acute HCV outbreak cluster in California, showing the potential of automated surveillance, though real-time testing is needed. SaTScan, a free spatiotemporal scanning tool, detected a cluster of acute hepatitis C virus (HCV) cases associated with a verified outbreak at a Los Angeles County pain clinic the day after the second outbreak-related case was reported, according to a proof-of-concept (POC) analysis recently published in JMIR Public Health and Surveillance.1 The findings suggest that automated cluster detection could help health departments identify outbreaks that traditional case investigation may miss. Challenges in HCV Outbreak Detection Prompt Automated Surveillance EvaluationBetween 55% and 85% of people with acute HCV infection do not clear the virus on their own, but early diagnosis and treatment can prevent progression to chronic HCV and its complications, including hepatocellular carcinoma. Outbreaks typically arise in settings with a high risk of percutaneous exposure, such as among people who inject drugs and in health care facilities.

AbstractCardiovascular disease (CVD) is a major public health burden among middle-aged and older adults in China. Dyslipidemia and central obesity jointly contribute to CVD risk, but the association between long-term cumulative exposure to composite lipid-abdominal obesity indicators and incident CVD remains unclear. This study examined whether cumulative average lipoprotein combined index–waist circumference (LCI-WC), defined using natural log-transformed lipoprotein combined index (LCI) and waist circumference (WC), was associated with incident CVD. Data were obtained from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS). Cumulative average LCI-WC was calculated as the mean of LCI-WC values measured in 2011 and 2015, where LCI-WC was defined as ln (LCI)×WC. Incident CVD was assessed at the 2018 follow-up.
Apple is trying to tighten its control of the iOS App Store, especially as it regards AI deepfake nude photos. In a brief note on its developer website, Apple announced a change to its moderation tactics for the App Store. These new measures target apps capable of generating "nonconsensual intimate imagery" of real people using user-generated content tools. Pornographic material is already banned on the App Store, and so are apps explicitly designed to do that, but apps that have the potential to do so are now also required to filter such content, provide a way to report it, prevent uploads, and remove anything that gets through all of that.
The change here, essentially, is that app makers are now required to self-police more thoroughly against AI nude photos. If any app is found to violate those rules, as well as a new one prohibiting "bait and switch" tactics (such as misrepresenting what the app can do during the submission review period), it can and will be pulled from the App Store. In addition, developers behind these apps can have their ability to submit to the App Store revoked.
New York Islanders @ Toronto Maple Leafs07:00 PM at Scotiabank ArenaWatch on: SN, MSGSNThe Leafs last game was at home on October 15 against the Buffalo Sabres, which Toronto lost by a score of 5-4 in overtime. The Leafs have a record of 3-3-2 for a 0.500 Points %. The New York Islanders last played away on October 15 against the Ottawa Senators. The Islanders lost by a score of 2-1 in a shootout, and their current league record is 3-3-1 for a 0.500 Points %. ThemHere we are again playing a team with a nearly identical record so far this season. Both teams lost their last game at the coinflip stage, and would like a win. The interesting thing about the Islanders is the success of Matias Maccelli (who I am thrilled for, I liked him a lot). He's essentially their Jack Roslovic, who is doing great for the Leafs, so it's good things all around. The Islanders should be scary good on defence with their savant Matthew Schaefer leading the way. But they've been allowing a lot of shots against so far. Both goalies have been good, and the newly surgically repaired Varlamov has fantastic results in only two games played.
