Trashy TV and a serious documentary struggle to make entertainment out of Alec Baldwin's Rust trauma - Yahoo

"Everybody wants to believe they have some control over their lives and how people see them. " That line opens The Trial Of Alec Baldwin, a documentary hitting theaters this week about the actor's experiences following the accidental shooting on the set of Rust that killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. Baldwin, the man making that statement as a camera crew follows him all the way to a New Mexico courtroom, where he faces criminal charges of involuntary manslaughter, immediately notes that this might be a futile endeavor. "The worst thing for me is to be misunderstood," he adds, which may explain why he allowed director Rory Kennedy to document these painful moments. Certainly, there's some dignity in allowing an Emmy-winning filmmaker, one who has made films on topics as hefty as Abu Ghraib and the Vietnam War, to tell this story. Kennedy's work is celebrated for its journalistic approach, which feels befitting of Baldwin's highly serious self-image. But not even this straightforward, no-nonsense style can stop Baldwin from getting in his own way.

Corgi has become insurance's wildest startup. Internal messages reveal the drama behind the scenes. - Business Insider

"If you can't raise a dog, you cannot run an office. "That was the message Nico Laqua, cofounder and CEO of buzzy insurance startup Corgi, sent to staff in the New York office about one of the company's short-legged mascots. A vet had told the employees that the puppy, Hamilton, should not be outside because he wasn't fully vaccinated, so they were using pee pads in the office. After Laqua, based in San Francisco, heard that workers were not walking Hamilton, he laid down the law in a July 19 missive. "Buying pee pads of any sort for Hamilton is a fireable office [sic], on the spot," he wrote in the message. Those who refused to take the corgi to the street should book a one-on-one. "The best case scenario for this meeting will be a PIP," he said, using shorthand for the disciplinary process known as a performance improvement plan. It's hard to imagine this kind of C-suite drama playing out at Liberty Mutual, Berkshire Hathaway, or other giants of the buttoned-up commercial underwriting industry. But Corgi is decidedly not your granddaddy's insurance company. The CEO is loudly online, bragging his way across X while communicating with his staff on the messaging app Telegram.

1 in 13 adults under 30 already had hidden artery plaque - Science Daily

Atherosclerosis, the gradual buildup of plaque inside arteries that drives most cardiovascular disease, can begin many years before a person notices any symptoms. Now, a large international study suggests that this hidden disease is already present in some young adults who otherwise appear healthy, and that it is considerably more widespread than previously recognized. The research was led by Professor Henning Bundgaard, Professor of Cardiology at Rigshospitalet in Copenhagen, Denmark, and Dr. Borja Ibáñez, Scientific Director of the Centro Nacional de Investigaciones Cardiovasculares Carlos III, CNIC, cardiologist at Hospital Universitario Fundación Jiménez Díaz and a group leader at CIBERCV.

‘Online sex workers literally have to bare it all’: why Patricia Nilsson is exposing the world’s biggest porn bosses - The Guardian

There was a time, a few decades ago, when the men who owned the world’s biggest pornography businesses were happy to be famous. They paraded a lifestyle they hoped looked glamorous, appearing in public dressed in silk pyjamas or with a woman in swimwear on each arm. Porn moguls like Hustler’s Larry Flynt or Playboy’s Hugh Hefner were household names. “Say what you want about these old perverts, who once set the tone of our sexual culture, but at least you knew who they were and what they were selling,” Patricia Nilsson writes in her new book, Guilty Pleasure: The Pornification of the Internet, the Economy, and Everything Else. “These days, the men calling the shots are nowhere to be seen.”It’s not that they simply feel shy about posing alongside the women who generate their income, or are wary of giving interviews. The owners of the industry’s biggest companies are so anxious to remain anonymous that we often don’t even know their names. They have understood that it is wiser to live in total obscurity.

Historic science museum in Philadelphia to close - NPR

Philadelphia's Academy of Natural Sciences is set to close down thanks to financial pressures. The 198-year-old museum houses important scientific specimens and a beloved dinosaur exhibit. JUANA SUMMERS, HOST: A month ago, Drexel University announced it is closing Philadelphia's Academy of Natural Sciences Museum this week. The 198-year-old academy's collection of scientific specimens is one of the most important in the world. Its sudden demise comes amidst a continuing decline in funding for cultural and scientific institutions. Reporter Andrew Stelzer visited the museum on its final weekend. ANDREW STELZER, BYLINE: Before you even get past the lobby, just turn to your right, and there they are. UNIDENTIFIED CHILD: I'm seeing some real dinosaurs. It's my first time there (ph). STELZER: It's your first time seeing a dinosaur? UNIDENTIFIED CHILD: Yeah. STELZER: The Academy of Natural Sciences was the first place in the world to display a dinosaur skeleton, back in 1868. Even now, the dinos are still wowing attendees like Remington and Cameron Howard here on a school field trip. UNIDENTIFIED CHILD: T.rex - look at his whole body. It's just, like, sharp teeth.

How American political campaigns are using AI – and what they’re spending on the tools - The Guardian

New campaign finance disclosure data shines a light on which US political campaigns are using AI tools and how much they are spending on them. Candidates’, parties’ and committees’ spending reveals that AI is fast becoming an essential tool of politics. The candidates themselves are quiet about how they are using the technology in their own campaigns. It’s a sensitive issue that we have been tracking closely since we started writing our book, Rewiring Democracy, which examined how AI is beginning to influence politics. A September 2025 Pew survey of Americans found that more than 70% would think less of a candidate if they used AI to help write a speech. Itemized expenditure disclosure data from the US Federal Election Commission, dating back to 2020, reveals at least $17m in disclosed spending on AI technology vendors across 523 federal candidates and campaigns. Data from four states, California, Colorado, Massachusetts and Washington, provides a more localized picture going back to 2022. Beginning with the AI behemoths, at least 80 federal campaigns and committees have reported spending with OpenAI since 2024.
