As ranking member of the US Senate Environmental and Public Works committee, Senator Sheldon Whitehouse convened a “spotlight” hearing Tuesday, September 29, also attended by Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer and Senator Jeff Merkley, to highlight the consequences of industry and Trump administration attacks on climate science. Senator Whitehouse invited me to testify at the hearing, on the topic of these attacks on science, the industries benefiting from these attacks, and the harm they’ve caused that affect the health and safety of everyone in the US. My full written testimony is here, and the oral testimony I delivered yesterday is below. You can also watch the full hearing. The Supreme Court will be considering the question of fossil fuel industry accountability for climate deception and its resulting harms on Monday, October 5, in oral arguments for the case Suncor v Boulder. I’ll be speaking at the People vs Big Oil rally outside the Supreme Court that morning in support of justice for the people of Boulder, Colorado, and all of us whose health, safety, and livable environment are at risk because of the decades of deception perpetrated by the fossil fuel industry.

Here’s Where the World Cup Is Going in 2027 - Gripped Climbing Magazine
The 2027 World Climbing schedule has just been released. The series of competition climbing events takes place every year at different locations. The inaugural World Cup was held in 1989, and it only held competitions for Lead. It wasn’t until 1998 that Speed was added as a discipline, perhaps surprisingly, one year before Boulder. The World Cup circuit in 2027 will kick off in April in Japan with a Boulder event. It will then move on to China, where there will be three events at three different locations: Keqiao for Boulder, Shanghai for Lead and Speed, and Wujiang for Speed. In early May, South Korea will host a Speed event. At the end of the month, the series will continue in Europe, stopping in Switzerland (Boulder), the U. K. (Lead, Speed), Austria (Boulder, Speed), France (Lead, Speed), Spain (Lead), and Slovenia (Lead). There will be a Boulder and Speed event in the United States in September before heading back to France for one final Boulder event.

World News in Brief: Storm clouds over Gaza, deadly obstacles face Mexican women rights defenders, Latvia booze ban proves lifesaver - UN News
Since Monday, partners have assessed three possible sites for temporary shelters for people choosing to leave flood-prone areas or war-damaged buildings at risk of collapse. They are also examining more than 450 existing displacement sites at high risk of flooding – home to about a fifth of Gaza’s population. Land and accessExplosive ordnance must be cleared from the new sites before voluntary relocation can happen at scale, Mr. Dujarric said, along with levelling sandy ground and installing drainage, water and lighting. “The main obstacle is restrictions on access to 65 per cent of Gaza’s land”, he said, adding that the remaining 35 per cent is already overcrowded. More Israeli approvals are needed to import machinery, spare parts and engine oil, while funding for fuel and shelter is also urgently required. Meanwhile, health partners are training local medical staff to manage non-communicable diseases, but medicine shortages are limiting early detection and treatment.

Turning More Than 30 Years of Technology into Social Value The World's First Compact NMR System, Built on Superconducting and Cryogenic Technologies - www.aisin.com
NMR (Nuclear Magnetic Resonance) systems are analytical instruments used to examine the composition and molecular structure of pharmaceuticals, chemical materials, and food products. Using the same magnetic resonance principle as MRI systems used in medical applications, they support research, development, and quality evaluation. High-performance NMR systems, however, are typically large and burdensome to install and maintain. To address this issue, AISIN leveraged the superconducting and ultra-low-temperature refrigeration technologies it had cultivated over many years. Through research with RIKEN and joint development of the system’s spectrometer with JEOL Ltd., it commercialized the world’s first* compact, high-performance NMR system.*1 The first commercialized 200 MHz-class NMR system utilizing a bulk superconducting magnet. In its 2028 Medium-Term Management Plan, AISIN has set out to strengthen its earning power while continuing to invest in future growth. This initiative is an effort to turn the groundwork laid through years of research into value that can be put to use in society and developed into a new business.

Netflix’s East Of Eden Brings Humanity To Cathy Ames: Florence Pugh & Zoe Kazan Explain The Change - Refinery29
Photo: Courtesy of Netflix. In John Steinbeck's East of Eden, Cathy Ames is often seen as the true villain, a "monster" or someone unable to change. In Zoe Kazan's adaptation for Netflix, while Cathy (Florence Pugh) still makes some horrific choices, there's more nuance around why. It's set in an era where women are seen as property and must pander to men for survival. This means bearing children, accepting violence, and never having independence outside of the marriage. When faced with this climate, is it any wonder she feels the need to do whatever is necessary to survive? Showrunner and writer Zoe Kazan tells Refinery29 Australia she doesn't see the TV series as revisionist. Instead, she feels it's her interpretation of the text. "I don't really read [Cathy] as an antagonist. I think she's a plot generator. She's the catalytic element in this story. She's the agent of change," Kazan begins. "Steinbeck is repulsed by her, attracted to her, and fascinated by her. And I share all those feelings. " The writer points out that while the author does introduce Cathy by describing her as a "monster born to human parents", later in the book he becomes more reflective.
