Habs playoff fever is good for business: Moneris Data - The Suburban Newspaper

With the Montreal Canadiens, the Edmonton Oilers and the Ottawa Senators in the NHL playoffs, the excitement of fans cheering on their home team could translate into real wins for local bars and restaurants. While the road to the Stanley Cup may be long, data from commerce provider Moneris shows that bars and restaurants are scoring plenty of wins along the way. The NHL playoffs drive a noticeable increase in spending at food and beverage establishments. As teams advance, fans gather to watch the games, boosting foot traffic and sales, especially during high-stakes matchups. “When Canadian teams make the playoffs, it can lift spirits and it can boost sales. Moneris data has consistently shown that when Canadian teams hit the ice, local businesses feel that momentum, too,” stated Sean McCormick, Vice President of Business Development, Data Services. “Whether it’s the ICE District, the Bell Centre or the Canadian Tire Centre, the energy from fans turns into real support for local restaurants and bars.”So, while only one team ultimately lifts the Stanley Cup, many businesses benefit from a sustained economic boost throughout the playoffs.

Canadians set to cast their ballots in B.C., Ontario and Quebec byelections - Global News

Voters are set to head to the polls on Monday in three federal by-elections with the trade war between Canada and the U. S. expected to be a key factor on many people’s minds. Votes are taking place in British Columbia, Ontario and a third in Quebec following the resignations and departures of their MPs. In B. C., the Liberals are hoping to hold on to North Vancouver-Capilano, which they’ve held since 2015. Most recently, it belonged to long-time MP and minister Jonathan Wilkinson who left to take on the role of Canada’s ambassador to the European Union. Over the years, Wilkinson served as minister of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard, minister of Environment and Climate Change and, in his last role, as minister of Energy and Natural Resources. He was dropped from cabinet following the 2025 federal election. Story continues below advertisement

Abandoned Oil And Gas Pipes Are Still Contributing Tons of Microplastics Into The Ocean Each Year - ScienceAlert

A gas platform in the North Sea. (Leon Neal/Getty Images News) Decades after offshore oil and gas projects are decommissioned, the underwater pipelines that are left behind continue to shed microplastics into the ocean. On the United Kingdom continental shelf alone, scientists estimate these abandoned, degrading pipelines and umbilicals (such as hoses and cables) are generating around 500 metric tons (~550 US tons) of microplastics each year, as reported in a new study in the Journal of Hazardous Materials. "Our lowest release scenario is a similar order of magnitude to the annual releases of microplastics to the North Sea from UK rivers," the study's authors write. "Our highest is considerably more than annual microbead releases from cosmetics prior to the UK ban. "The study was led by marine scientist Freija Mendrik, from the University of Plymouth in the UK. Comparison of plastic emissions (metric tons) entering the marine environment from various sources (note log scale). (Mendrik et al., J. Haz. Mat., 2026)Mendrik says her team's findings highlight a seriously overlooked source of microplastic pollution, which may already be affecting marine life.

Big business has shown small firms what to do – and what not to do – with AI | Gene Marks - The Guardian

One thing I’ve learned about corporate America is that what it succeeds at ultimately trickles down to benefit small businesses. Bleeding-edge technologies such as the internet, mobile transactions and the cloud were first perfected by large organizations – government and corporations – and now they’re available to the masses at a much lower cost and with better reliability. The good news is that it’s also the same for what they fail at. This is the lesson so far with artificial intelligence. Thanks to the billions invested – and in many cases squandered – by big brands, SMBs (small and mid-sized businesses) have learned what works, what doesn’t, where to spend and where to abstain. Small businesses should be grateful. We’re getting the answers without paying for all the mistakes. What works: AI for software development, customer service, security and voice. Big technology companies are already using AI to write, review and test code, allowing smaller development teams to accomplish more. Other firms have leaned in to AI to help with a variety of customer service processes with some success.

WHO releases US$150 000 emergency funds to support Nepal’s flood response - World Health Organization (WHO)

To support the ongoing response, WHO has dispatched medicines and supplies sufficient to provide basic health services for up to 10 000 people, along with six multipurpose tents to help sustain health service delivery in affected communities. The World Health Organization has released US$150 000 from the South-East Asia Regional Health Emergency Fund (SEARHEF) to support urgent health and other needs of the communities impacted by the devastating flash floods in Nepal, one of the worst tragedies in the country in recent times. “The emergency funds will support immediate response priorities. WHO is committed to supporting Nepal through the response and recovery efforts,” said Dr Nilesh Buddha, Officer-in-Charge, WHO South-East Asia Regional Office. Earlier, within hours of the flash floods on 26 August, WHO mobilized and dispatched essential emergency medical supplies, including an Interagency Emergency Health Kit that can cater to the health needs of nearly 10 000 people for 3 months, along with multipurpose tents. Based on urgent needs, WHO further mobilized surgical masks and gloves, hand sanitizers and other medical supplies for the affected areas.

7 things I never realized Canada did so badly until I moved abroad - Narcity

I'm super grateful to be from Canada, and I know a headline like this might make it sound like I don't love the country or appreciate where I'm from. That's definitely not true. But after moving to Japan and experiencing daily life on the other side of the world, I've started looking at Canada a little differently. Living abroad has a funny way of making you notice things you barely questioned back home. Some parts of Canadian life that always felt completely normal suddenly seem less convenient, more complicated or just... kind of unnecessary when you see how differently they're handled elsewhere. And it's not about saying Japan — or any other country — is objectively "better" than Canada. There are plenty of things I miss about home and things I think Canada gets right. But experiencing another culture firsthand has shown me that there are definitely areas where we could be taking notes. So, without further ado, here are seven things I think Canada could learn from other countries — even if I'll always be grateful to call it home. Flying within Canada is way too expensive
