E Ink Kaleido 4 Promises Faster Refresh and Richer Color for Next Wave of E-Readers - BigGo Finance

The next generation of color e-paper is arriving with a substantial performance leap, as E Ink Holdings unveiled its Kaleido 4 platform with claims of doubled color range, brighter whites, and a refresh rate fast enough to handle video. The Taiwanese display maker announced the technology on October 15, naming Hanvon Technology's M10C II smart notebook as the first commercial device built around the new panel. The upgrade targets long-standing complaints about color e-readers, where text often appears softer and images more washed out than on monochrome screens. E Ink says Kaleido 4 doubles the color gamut volume of its predecessor to more than 40,000 colors, while white reflectance climbs 15 percent and contrast improves by 50 percent. Perhaps most notably for a display category historically constrained by sluggish refreshes, the new panel can play video at up to 18 frames per second.

Nilay Patel on Apple's HomeView: 'It Is a Remote Control for an iPhone' - BigGo Finance

Apple's new HomeView smart display runs on the A18 chip, the same silicon inside the iPhone 16 lineup. It has a 7-inch screen, face recognition, and an upgraded Siri. It costs $299 and ships November 13. And it cannot run Apple TV, Apple News, Apple Music Classical, or Apple Books audiobooks natively — you have to beam them over from an iPhone via AirPlay. That fact, buried in fine print, is the tell. According to Nilay Patel, speaking on The Vergecast, HomeView is not a computer. It is a remote control for an iPhone.

Researchers Demonstrate OpenBSD Root Exploit Chaining 37-Year-Old Shared-Memory Bug - The Hacker News

Swati KhandelwalOct 16, 2026Vulnerability / OpenBSD A local privilege escalation exploit published today gains root on OpenBSD 7.9 by chaining a roughly 37-year-old integer overflow with a separate kernel flaw, bypassing OpenBSD's KARL kernel-address randomization and its SMAP and SMEP hardware protections. Security firm Calif, which found and reported the flaws, published a detailed writeup and full proof-of-concept code after OpenBSD shipped patches for both issues in September.

Global timekeeping rules change: leap second scrapped from 2027 - Yahoo News Canada

The world's official time standard will stop adding leap seconds from 20 May 2027. The General Conference on Weights and Measures (CGPM) decided to end the practice on Thursday 15 October 2026. The resolution was adopted at the conference's 28th meeting in Versailles, where delegates discussed the future of world time. Until now, leap seconds have been added from time to time to keep atomic time in line with the Earth's rotation. But from 20 May 2027, Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) will run continuously, with no interruptions. Why the leap second is being scrappedThe old rules were meant to keep two different ways of measuring time in step. UTC is based on extremely precise atomic clocks. Astronomical time depends on the Earth's rotation, and that rotation speed varies slightly. To keep the gap between the two time scales small, 27 leap seconds have been added since 1972. The most recent was at the end of 2016. As a result, one minute could exceptionally last 61 seconds. RelatedThese corrections are barely noticeable for people, but they can cause technical problems.

Pokémon TCG Pocket outline plans for mechanics overhauls, new features and more - GoNintendo

Back in August we saw DeNA, the developer behind Pokémon TCG Pocket, share their Q1 financial results, which showed a considerable drop in both revenue and profit. The studio said this was due to declines in Pokémon TCG Pocket, where monthly active users dropped from 39 million this time last year to 23 million in Q1 2026/2027. Of course, DeNA said they were working to get Pokémon TCG Pocket back on track. The developer stated that they had multiple irons in the fire, and that included rolling out various events and promotions while also getting players to log in more while retaining their interest and activity over a longer period of time. Today, we’ve finally gotten more insight into their plans.

This new theory on how AI ‘thinks’ could impact whether it kills us all - Business Insider

AI neurons and their connections are easier to understand than we thought, according to a researcher's new findings. How AI models think may be easier to decipher than we thought. An independent researcher who formerly worked at OpenAI published a report on Thursday that some in the AI world are describing as a bombshell. It could have implications as safety researchers scramble to get the jump on AI models that may not have humanity's best interests in mind. Previously, the prevailing wisdom was that AI "neurons," which, like those in a human brain, light up when an AI model encounters specific stimuli, were ultimately uninterpretable — meaning, basically, that there was no way to guess why a specific neuron would fire when an AI model was exposed to, say, a picture of a cat. Those building AI models at places like OpenAI and Anthropic don't write instructions for everything a model does. Instead, they train neurons to respond to information and influence one another. As the AI learns, it develops its own ways of processing that information, and humans have not yet cracked the code of how it works.
