Oilers’ new identity: Edmonton embraces Blue Collar Boys style of play - Oilers Nation

Somewhere in Edmonton, there’s a shiny sports car for sale because the organization traded it in for a pickup truck. Remember when high-vis vests were draped over the seats at Rogers Place on opening night? That wasn’t by accident; the high-flying Edmonton Oilers have become the Blue Collar Boys. Yesterday, Connor McDavid described the Oilers’ new identity.  “Yeah, it’s hard-working. It’s a hard-working group,” said the team captain. A new era has begun in Oil Country. It might not be as exciting, but boring hockey is sometimes needed. Lots of boring teams have won Stanley Cups, and even the skilled Colorado Avalanche and Tampa Bay Lightning play hard and check well. The RebrandAfter last year’s disappointing season, the Oilers decided enough was enough. The organization realized their team defence had to improve or the Stanley Cup was out of the question. Sean Panganiban wrote about this in May: “In the regular season (last season), the Oilers ranked 25th in goals against (265), and of the seven teams that gave up more goals than them, only one qualified for the playoffs.” Edmonton gave up the puck a lot, and the opposition had numerous high-danger chances.

Packers’ Jacobs eligible to return next week amid probe - TSN

GREEN BAY, Wis. -- Packers running back Josh Jacobs will be removed from the commissioner exempt list Monday, the league announced, making him eligible to practice and play next week. The league's investigation into Jacobs under the personal conduct policy remains ongoing, however, leaving open the possibility that he could still be suspended. When he comes off the list next week, Jacobs will have missed the first six games of the season, and those games would count toward any suspension. However, if Jacobs ends up getting suspended for more than six games, he will have to miss additional games to make up the difference. After playing the Cowboys this Sunday at Lambeau Field, the Packers will visit the Lions on Oct. 25. "Josh has dedicated the last several months to bettering himself, and he accepts responsibility for his actions," Jacobs' attorneys, Clarence F. Duchac III, David Z. Chesnoff and Richard A. Schonfeld, said in a statement. "He is excited to get back to work and on the field with his teammates. Josh is grateful for the support he is receiving from his teammates, coaches, the Packers organization, and the greatest fans in the world.

"We watched him (Thursday)," Stars coach Glen Gulutzan said. "Obviously the veteran presence is there and his actual paly, just how good he is along the walls. He's heavy and hard on pucks, he has a huge hockey IQ, he's competitive and that's the reason we got him. " Perron, who had been an unrestricted free agent since July 1, will be playing in his 20th NHL season.

McLaren 'not finished' as Piastri and Norris contract solution proposed - PlanetF1

Former Aston Martin and Alpine team boss Otmar Szafnauer has suggested that McLaren should link the contracts of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri to the team’s championship position in order to stamp out incidents like Singapore. That theory comes after McLaren team principal Andrea Stella confirmed that talks are “not finished” over how the Papaya squad moves forward after its drivers collided during the Singapore Sprint.

NHL Injury News: Tanev, Dickinson, Tavares - The Hockey Writers

IN today’s NHL injury news update, the status of Chris Tanev in Toronto remains unclear and the team might have lost another key player in John Tavares. Meanwhile, Jason Dickinson was unable to play on Thursday vs the Utah Mammoth, but the coach said it wasn’t an ankle injury, which everyone assumed it was. Finally, there is a list of approximately a dozen other issues facing several NHL teams. The Maple Leafs will be without veteran defenseman Chris Tanev for the foreseeable future. Toronto placed Tanev on injured reserve, retroactive to October 10, after he left Saturday’s win over the Colorado Avalanche with an upper-body injury following a collision with Artturi Lehkonen.

Line change lights scoring fuse for Canadiens winger Josh Anderson - Montreal Gazette

With 23 goals overall through seven games this season, it’s no secret the Canadiens are seeking more offence that will lead to improved results. That captain Nick Suzuki has four goals is no surprise. Neither should anyone be shocked that Cole Caufield — who scored a team-leading 51 goals last season — has three, along with Zachary Bolduc, who is historically a fast starter.

Als to start QB Crum as Alexander, Snead and Philpot all rest vs. Riders - TSN

The Saskatchewan Roughriders got two pieces of good news ahead of Saturday’s crucial tilt against the Montreal Alouettes: Davis Alexander will not be in the lineup for Montreal, and the Roughriders will have two key pieces back from injury. Per the team’s official depth chart, the Alouettes (13-3) are planning to start Dustin Crum at quarterback for the tilt. With the top spot in the East Division locked up, regular starter and CFL passing yards leader Alexander is set to rest in a meaningless game for Montreal. The Alouettes will also not have their top two receiving targets in the lineup for the matchup - Tyler Snead and Tyson Philpot. Philpot’s 1,809 receiving yards are tops in the CFL entering Week 20, while Snead ranks second in the league with 1,474 yards receiving. The two are tied for the league lead in receiving touchdowns with 13 apiece; five clear of any other receiver in the league this season. You can watch the Alouettes battle the Roughriders LIVE on TSN1/3, streaming on TSN.ca and on the TSN App, with coverage beginning Saturday at 3p.m. ET / Noon PT.

Jon Rahm sacrifices £75m to secure exit from LIV tour - BBC

Jon Rahm will give up a reported £75m owed to him by LIV Golf after reaching a separation agreement that will secure his exit from the league. The league filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the United States in September after Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund withdrew its multibillion-dollar backing. Spaniard Rahm was listed as the organisation's top unsecured creditor when LIV filed for bankruptcy, with $7.4m (£5.5m) owed to him for the rest of the 2026 season alone. ESPN reported he is owed about $100m (£75m), external from the remainder of the $300m, (£222m) contract he signed when he left the PGA Tour for LIV Golf in December 2023. Despite LIV securing a possible $300m in financing from BC Partners Credit to try and move forward with 'LIV 2.0', Rahm has deemed the proposed terms are "unacceptable". Instead, he has waived his entire claim in order to have a "complete economic walk-away". However, he will take the rights to 'Legion XIII' - the name of the LIV team Rahm captained - although he will not be allowed to use it to make a team in TGL - the indoor high-tech golf league launched by Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy.
