The Hartford Wolf Pack, the AHL affiliate of the New York Rangers, have signed unrestricted free agent goaltender James Reimer to a professional tryout agreement on Thursday. The Rangers are dealing with the injuries at the goaltending position. Franchise goaltender Igor Shesterkin is out for the season after suffering a knee injury on Oct. 9. Dylan Garand, 24, is currently the starter while Joonas Korpisalo remains on the injured reserve with a lower-body. Reimer, 38, joined the Ottawa Senators midway through the 2025-26 season and went 7-4-1 with a 2.42 goals-against average and an .886 save percentage. He did not appear in the team’s four-game loss to the Carolina Hurricanes in the first round of the playoffs. The 6-foot-2 netminder is coming off a one-year, $850,000 contract. Drafted 99th overall by the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2006, Reimer has a career 232-191-67 record with a .909 save percentage and 2.88 GAA split between the Maple Leafs, San Jose Sharks, Florida Panthers, Carolina Hurricanes, Detroit Red Wings, Anaheim Ducks, Buffalo Sabres, and Senators.

Had a 24-team playoff been implemented last season, here's how it would have changed things.

We are about six or seven games into the NHL regular season. While that isn’t exactly a large sample size, we don’t need many games to have strong opinions. Some teams have lived up to the hype while others haven’t. What are the big surprises so far? Between teams and players, five things really jump out. There is a lot of hockey left, but these are the things that caught our attention early on.

CLEVELAND (AP) — In a season where Cleveland rookies helped propel to the Guardians to their third straight AL Central title, it was the team’s emotional spark plug that powered the Guardians to a pivotal victory in Game 3 of the AL Championship Series. Petey Halpin hit a go-ahead, two-run homer in the fifth inning and followed with a majestic bat flip as the Guardians beat the Tampa Bay Rays 3-2 Thursday for a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven series. “It’s the second time he’s kind of picked us up in a big spot this year. And a really fun moment for him, great swing,” Cleveland manager Stephen Vogt said. Halpin watched the ball clear the wall in right-center and then launched his bat over his head and into the sky before rounding the bases. The bat might have gone higher than the 25-degree launch angle on his homer. “I definitely threw it high. I think just the moment and that being for sure the biggest moment of my career, just the energy and the excitement, just kind of let it go,” Halpin said. The home run and the bat flip energized Cleveland’s dugout and the 30,101 fans in attendance at Progressive Field.

The six-foot-six, 208-pound target made 29 receptions for 323 yards and one touchdown over 27 career regular-season games with the team. He missed the entire 2025 season due to a knee injury.

Extra rest has helped Gavin Williams dominate in the post-season for the Guardians. Thanks to his latest start and Petey Halpin's homer, Cleveland leads the ALCS, writes Shi Davidi.
