One Albertan has already died from influenza as the province records more than 400 cases before flu vaccines become widely available, raising concerns about an early start to the season.
According to provincial data, Alberta has recorded 411 flu cases so far this season, along with nearly 50 hospitalizations and one death. The Calgary zone has been hit hardest, recording the highest number of cases in the province so far this season.
High levels of potassium in the blood, common in people on certain medications or with kidney disease, often come with no symptoms, but can be deadly in severe cases.
Because people with hyperkalemia, or high potassium, often "feel normal," their treating physicians must determine whether their condition can be safely managed outside the hospital or requires more urgent treatment in the emergency department.

In England, the incidence of bowel and ovarian cancer has increased statistically significantly among people under 50, while no such increase was recorded in the group aged 50 and over. This was shown by a study published in BMJ Oncology, ScienceDaily reports. Scientists analyzed records from England’s National Disease Registration Service for 2001–2019. They compared trends in more than 20 types of cancer among men and women aged 20 to 49 and among people aged 50 and over. Increase in several types of cancerAmong younger women, a statistically significant increase was identified for 16 of the 22 studied cancer types, and among younger men, for 11 of 21. People under 50 more often developed thyroid, liver, kidney, gallbladder, bowel, pancreatic, oral, breast and ovarian cancers, as well as multiple myeloma and endometrial cancer. Among younger women, the incidence of endometrial, kidney, pancreatic and thyroid cancers, as well as multiple myeloma, rose faster than in the older group. Among men, this trend was found only for multiple myeloma. More current news is available on the UA. News Telegram channel Telegram.

A surprising feature of how the brain stores memories could help explain why harmless situations can sometimes quickly feel threatening, a hallmark of anxiety and trauma disorders.
Scientists have long believed that fear helps the brain draw a clearer line between danger and safety. The new study from researchers at the Douglas Research Centre at McGill University and the University of Toronto-Scarborough, published in Nature Neuroscience, suggests the opposite.
In the summer of 2026, two studies revived the debate on embryo gene editing, a technique that consists of manipulating the DNA of a human embryo for reasons ranging from better understanding human development to preventing children from developing certain diseases.
One study was led by Kathy Niakan at Cambridge University in the United Kingdom, and the other by Dieter Egli at Columbia University in the United States.
Nvidia chief executive Jensen Huang announced the plans in Paris on Tuesday, saying they were intended to "launch the artificial intelligence revolution in Europe". Neither Nvidia nor the French companies disclosed the size or value of the stakes. Doctolib, one of France's best-known technology companies, said Nvidia would become a minority shareholder without a seat on its board. The platform, valued at €3.6 billion in its last funding round, allows patients to book medical appointments and store health records. Chief executive Stanislas Niox-Château said the investment would accelerate recruitment and the development of Doctolib's in-house artificial intelligence (AI) models. These are intended to power a personal health assistant for patients and assistants for medical staff, covering administrative and clinical tasks. EU steps up AI regulation as new transparency rules come into effectDoctolib will use Nvidia's chips, computing capacity and open software, while seeking to retain control of its models and patient data rather than relying on US AI providers such as OpenAI or Anthropic.
Data show that Canadian adolescents have faced serious mental health challenges in recent years. Now, a new national study suggests migrant girls may be among those most in need of support. While mental health worsened among all youth between 2014 and 2022, this new data indicates that migrant girls are being left behind.
Researchers from the University of Regina and the University of British Columbia published the study in the Journal of School Health. They analyzed data from more than 76,000 Canadian students aged 11 to 15 who participated in the nationally representative Health Behaviour in School-aged Children survey in 2014, 2018, and 2022. It is among the first Canadian studies to track mental health trends among migrant youth and compare them with Canadian-born peers over time.
Optical coherence tomography (OCT) has transformed the diagnosis and management of retinal, optic nerve and anterior segment diseases. It is incorporated in evidence-based practice guidelines and pivotal clinical trials as the reference imaging modality for diagnosis, treatment decisions and monitoring. Spectral-domain OCT (SD-OCT) instruments have remained the mainstay office-based platform taking over the previous time-domain OCT (TD-OCT) option. Advancements in OCT technology have expanded its clinical applications, enabling imaging from the cornea to the peripheral retina. Clinicians have several commercially available spectral-domain (SD) OCT models to choose from. For this article, four prominent ones will be described: Cirrus HD SD-OCT 5000 (Carl Zeiss Meditec), 3D OCT-1 Maestro2 (Topcon Healthcare), Spectralis SD-OCT (Heidelberg Engineering) and Optovue iVue80 (Visionix). This article outlines the basics of OCT imaging, the newest model updates, a guided data analysis of the different instruments’ metrics and how to interpret various measurements using each model. Enhanced Depth Imaging (EDI-OCT) This technology positions deeper structures near the zero-delay line.
