Public Health Newsletter – Fall 2026 - College of Veterinary Medicine | Washington State University

It’s Fall Semester, and we’re back! What an exciting time for students, faculty, and staff. As we return to the hustle and bustle amid chilly mornings and a landscape of glorious gold and crimson leaves, it’s the perfect time to reflect on the spring and summer accomplishments of the College of Veterinary Medicine’s Public Health community. Dr. Allick continued to build connections across teaching, research, mentorship, and community engagement for the Washington State University (WSU) Public Health Program. Two undergraduates engaged actively in research, including a former Public Health 101 student Riley Sharp (now an undergraduate researcher collaborating with Dr. Allick) who developed a project on college students’ knowledge and perceptions of dementia and aging, and another, Leah Grier, who explored disability access while completing a summer internship at Seattle Children’s.

The risk of measles spreading “remains very high” due to the expectation that more people will be travelling both domestically and internationally in coming months for religious events, according to the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), a World Health Organization (WHO) body for the Americas, in a press release on Oct. 9. “Measles cases have also risen globally in 2026, increasing the likelihood of imported cases through international travel and onward transmission in communities with low immunity,” according to the news release. Federal maternal, infant health data collection system remains weak, puts health outcomes in jeopardy - Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health

Medicaid funding cuts are jeopardizing the health of U. S. mothers and infants—and with a weak federal database to monitor maternal health outcomes, the consequences may not be fully seen or understood, according to researchers at Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health. Since January 2025, the Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (PRAMS), a federal program collecting data on pregnant and postpartum women and their babies, has experienced a series of disruptions. Initially, the federal government halted all PRAMS data collection, removed access to existing data, and put the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) team that oversaw PRAMS and provided technical assistance to researchers and policymakers utilizing its data on administrative leave. Since then, there’s been a partial reversal regarding data collection and processing: Short-term funding renewals have restarted some of it. But the CDC oversight team remains on leave. And the public portal containing decades of prior PRAMS data remains offline.

Popular sports supplement may help shield the brain from damage linked to gut inflammation - Medical Xpress

Creatine showed protective effects against brain inflammation triggered by chronic ulcerative colitis. The gut-brain axis is a two-way biochemical hotline, with messages zipping back and forth all day long. When the gut is chronically inflamed, inflammatory signals travel through the body to the brain and trigger neuroinflammation. The hippocampus, which governs memory, learning and mood, is especially vulnerable, so its disruption can affect how you think, remember and feel.

Prairie Mountain Health: Many of Dauphin Regional Health Centre services restored - Q Country 91.5FM

The emergency department and some palliative care beds are among the services at Dauphin Regional Health Centre that have been restored as of this month according to a release from Prairie Mountain Health. The hospital, the second largest acute care centre in the PMH region, was hit hard by flooding at the end of June and start of July, becoming heavily flooded on Canada Day and forced to close. This also forced the evacuation of hospital patients and the suspension of services. While PMH said their work is not completely finished, they have restored a number of services at the Health Centre. As of October 1, these include: Reopening the 24-7 Emergency Department.
