An apple a day - Economics Observatory

Across the world, people are living longer, healthier lives than ever before. Yet in some rich countries, including the UK, progress has stalled or reversed. Policy responses must ensure that jobs, local economies and food systems support good health – and that healthy choices are easier to make. Newsletter – 16 October 2026Health is one of the main determinants of our quality of life. It shapes our ability to work, move freely and live without the burden of chronic pain or illness. For over a century, advances in medicine, sanitation and public health have helped people around the world to live longer and healthier lives. Child mortality has plummeted, antibiotics and vaccines have tamed infectious diseases, and improvements in maternal healthcare have made childbirth safer. But in some of the richest countries in the world, the trend of progress is faltering. In the UK over the period from 2022 to 2024, healthy life expectancy – the number of years that people can expect to spend in good health – fell to 60.9 years for women and 60.6 for men, the lowest levels since reporting began in 2011 (see Figure 1). Newly discovered viruses reveal an evolutionary missing link - Phys.org

Biophysical model of the origin and evolution of HK97-fold compartments. Researchers at the University of Miami have identified a group of previously unknown viruses that bridge an evolutionary gap between viruses and cellular protein compartments, a discovery with implications for both biotechnology and scientists' understanding of the origins of life. The findings, published in Nature Communications, challenge the theory that these cellular compartments, called encapsulins, simply evolved from viruses. Instead, the researchers found evidence that viruses and encapsulins evolved from one another repeatedly over millions of years.
