Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney says Alberta separation vote comes at ‘worst time’ - ABC News - Breaking News, Latest News and Videos

CALGARY, Alberta -- Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney warned Thursday that the United States is trying to break Canada so it can “own us” as he urged oil-rich Alberta not to begin a process toward separation in Monday’s referendum. The vote is not a direct referendum on independence. Alberta, which has the world’s fourth-largest proven oil reserves, will decide whether to remain a province or instruct the government to begin the legal process toward a future referendum on separation. “This referendum comes at the worst possible time,” Carney told a large pro-Canada rally in Calgary. “The world has become more dangerous and divided. Some outside our borders are working to break us so they can own us.”He did not directly mention the U. S. or its President Donald Trump in that passage, but has done so in similar past speeches. Carney’s warning came as U. S. President Donald Trump wages a trade war with Canada and after his repeated threats to make Canada the 51st U. S. state. Carney has argued that Canada needs to become more economically resilient and less dependent on the United States.

Warm welcome for Carney in Calgary as Alberta hurtles toward referendum vote - Global News

Prime Minister Mark Carney stumped for Canada on a last-ditch tour Thursday, urging supporters to not only vote to stay in Confederation but to also reject nine other Alberta referendum questions put on the ballot by Premier Danielle Smith. “It’s time for us to come together, stand up for ourselves and take care of each other,” Carney told the cheering crowd at a city park. Carney and other politicians are converging in the province to rally support for Canada – and to urge pro-Canada voters to make sure to mark their ballots on referendum day Monday. Earlier Thursday, he was met by supporters at a restaurant in the northeast. He was later given a bouquet of flowers by staff and posed for photos.

Canada courting Indian business partnerships in race to seal trade deal - CBC

Canada’s largest trade mission to India in 30 years has netted about 30 commercial partnerships worth $300 million, according to International Trade Minister Maninder Sidhu. "It’s a market we can’t ignore," Sidhu told CBC News in an interview in Mumbai this week. A weeklong trade pitch to India wrapped up Friday in Bengaluru, a southern Indian city with a large high-tech industry. The 300-member Team Canada also visited Mumbai to connect Canadian businesses and industry with Indian ventures. At a news conference, Sidhu announced a partnership between the international airports in Vancouver and Bengaluru, "laying the groundwork for direct air service between Canada and one of the world's fastest-growing markets," he said. The trade minister also highlighted that Canada’s Fairfax Financial Holdings acquired a majority stake in IDBI, an Indian bank, for close to $8 billion, the largest-ever foreign investment by a Canadian entity in India’s financial sector, according to Sidhu. "It shows the enormous opportunity for Canadian investors doing business here in India. And it's a vote of confidence in the Canada-India relationship," he said.

Police seized drugs from a Saskatoon home, returned 2 days later to gruesome murder scene - CBC

Warning: This story contains graphic details about a murder scene. When police responded to a 911 call at a home one winter day in Saskatoon, they didn't find an emergency. They did find a flimsily barricaded door that appeared to have been kicked in, a young man sleeping on a couch upstairs, and a jumbled pile of "suspicious" brown glass bottles with pink liquid on a bed downstairs. Officers seized the bottles. They didn't arrest or charge the man on the couch. Two days later, when police returned with a search warrant for the same house, they found that man again. In pieces. His name was Lee Perkins. He was 25 years old. He had been tortured, killed and mutilated. Officers found his remains stuffed into a large plastic tote. Lee Perkins's parents, brother and sister-in-law are seen outside Saskatoon Court of King's Bench in September, wearing shirts with his photo on the front. On the back, the shirts say, "Justice for Lee. " (Hannah Spray/CBC)3 people chargedThree people are accused in relation to his death, and because of the multiple court proceedings, almost all of the details about the case were subject to publication bans, to protect their rights to fair trials.
