Scottie Scheffler: Will world No 1 break more Tiger Woods records in top spot and who could be next to replace him? - Sky Sports

Scottie Scheffler continues to be the dominant world No 1 in men's golf, but how long will he stay top of the rankings and will he put more of Tiger Woods' records under threat? Scheffler remains the most recent addition to the list of 25 players to have topped the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) since its introduction in 1986, with the American having four different spells at No 1 so far in his career. The latest spell remains unbroken since May 2023, with Scheffler - as of October 12 - entering his 178th consecutive week as world No 1 and with a larger advantage over world No 2 Rory McIlroy than the Northern Irishman has over almost every active professional.

World's oldest shipwreck found off Kekova Island in Turkey - BBC

3 days agoAlison Francis, Rebecca MorelleandKevin Church, BBC News ScienceThe world's oldest shipwreck has been discovered off the coast of Turkey, archaeologists say. They have dated it to between 4,400 and 4,700 years old, which is the Early Bronze Age, and is around the same time that the Great Pyramid was being built. The ship's wooden structure has not survived, but the ceramic storage pots it was carrying were lying on the sea floor and, remarkably, some still contain traces of what they held inside. The archaeologists who found the ship say it was about 10m in length and was a trade vessel carrying cargo across the Mediterranean Sea. "The shipwreck is a time capsule at the bottom of the sea," said Prof Hakan Öniz, from Akdeniz University in Turkey, who led the Mediterranean Archaeology Association expedition. Hakan ÖnizThe divers found three stone anchors, as ships carried spares on long voyages The wreck is close to the shore of Kekova Island in Antalya, Turkey. The artefacts lie scattered across an underwater slope, just 30m beneath the waves. Three large stone anchors were found, as well as more than 30 ceramic storage pots, called amphorae.

France: 17 October – towards a revolutionary crisis? - In Defence of Marxism

Yesterday, hundreds of thousands of workers and youth mobilised across France for the latest in the recent wave of student-led protests sweeping the country. With 90 percent of French universities and hundreds of schools shut yesterday, it is clear that this youth-led movement has not been cowed or diminished in scale, despite brutal police repression. We publish below an article by Jérôme Métellus originally published in French at marxiste.org, which lays out the tasks ahead, if the successes of yesterday’s protests are to be turned into a struggle that can deal a killing blow to the hated Macron government. On 13 October, university and high school students mobilised massively once again. They have repeated 6 October’s show of force. This confirms the depth of the movement, its enormous reserves of fighting spirit – and its revolutionary potential. All eyes are now on 17 October. The idea was launched before the start of the magnificent mobilisation of high school students. But they, like the university students, naturally seized upon it. They have made 17 October a major step in their fight against the dismantling of the national education system.

High on wins in Tigray, Ethiopia now has Eritrea in its crosshairs - Responsible Statecraft

On Friday, Ethiopian Foreign Minister Gedion Timothewos wrote to the U. N. Security Council, citing Article 51 of the U. N. Charter, to say Eritrean troops had advanced up to 38 miles into Ethiopia’s northern Tigray region and that Ethiopia would defend itself against the incursion. On Saturday, Eritrean Foreign Minister Osman Saleh wrote a separate letter to the Security Council, calling Ethiopia’s accusations a “declaration of war.” Saleh cited a statement he attributed to Ethiopia’s deputy chief of staff, Gen. Abebaw Tadesse, who, according to the letter, said on September 27 that the “ultimate objective of the war [in Tigray] was to invade Assab,” a city on Eritrea’s Red Sea coast. Ethiopian forces, meanwhile, reportedly struck Eritrean forces near Adirgat, in Ethiopia's Tigray region, with drones on Wednesday and Thursday. An unnamed security source told AFP that between 5,000 and 8,000 Eritrean troops are deployed in Tigray. To understand why Ethiopian and Eritrean troops are now clashing, one must look back at 2020, when Ethiopia’s federal government under Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed fought the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF).

World Bank and IMF should lead the financial system in responding to the climate crisis - Climate Home News

Sandra Guzmán is director at the Climate Finance Group for Latin America and the Caribbean (GFLAC), and Raju Pandit Chhetri is lead climate finance negotiator for the least-developed countries at the UNFCCC. Recent catastrophic floods in Nepal starkly remind us that the climate crisis demands urgent action. The initial estimate that the country will need to spend $5 billion on recovery will likely remain a major concern. However, that is only one part of the story. No financial metric can capture the value of lives lost in crises like this. And this is not a standalone event; from the mountains of Nepal to the coastlines of Latin America and the Caribbean, developing countries are increasingly facing severe climate impacts. The average annual loss from climate disasters in the Latin American and Caribbean region is estimated at $58 billion. Human suffering remains immeasurable in all these instances.
