Ukrainian drones reportedly strike Yandex data center, warehouses in overnight attack on Russia - The Kyiv Independent

Editor's Note: This is a developing story and is being updated. Ukrainian forces appeared to strike multiple targets across Russia's Moscow, Rostov, and Vladimir regions in a widespread drone attack overnight on Oct. 16. The Kyiv Independent can not independently verify attack targets or damage at this time. According to monitoring channels ExileNova+ and SuperNova+, Russian technology giant Yandex's data center in Vladimir Oblast, around 500 kilometers (310 miles) from the Ukrainian border, was targeted in the overnight operation. Footage from residents at the scene shows large explosions and air defense systems operating around residential buildings. Following strikes on the same Yandex site on Oct. 11, the company announced operations at the data center had been completely shut down. That strike marked the third near-consecutive day of attacks on Yandex data centers in Russia, following confirmed strikes in Ryazan and Kaluga oblasts on Oct. 8 and 9. The string of attacks on Russian data centers follows President Volodymyr Zelensky's statement that Ukraine would retaliate in kind to Russian strikes on Ukrainian internet infrastructure.

Order to restrict Ukraine’s Starshield defence system came from White House, officials say - The Globe and Mail

Open this photo in gallery:Ukrainian servicemen set up a Starlink satellite internet system near the frontline town of Pokrovsk in Ukraine in April, 2025. Inna Varenytsia/ReutersThe order to limit a satellite system used by Ukraine for battlefield communications and drone operations came from inside the White House, according to two U. S. officials and a Western official briefed on the matter. The officials said leaders at the Defence Department received a message that the SpaceX Starshield service for the Ukrainian military needed to be slowed. The officials, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, did not specify who in the White House made the decision or who was responsible for implementing the order. The Pentagon is the biggest customer of Starshield, which is the military-grade version of the Starlink service. Ukrainian officials said this week that military-grade Starlink receptors stopped working in Ukraine when mounted on fast-moving objects, interfering with the performance of Ukrainian drones that rely on them for onboard guidance systems over Ukrainian territory.

Ethiopia alleges Eritrea is supporting TPLF, which launched a rebellion last month in the northern Ethiopian region of Tigray.-/AFP/Getty ImagesAfter weeks of clashes and military advances by both sides, a full-scale war between Ethiopia and Eritrea is looming as an increasingly dangerous possibility, triggering fears of another crisis in the Horn of Africa. Ethiopian troops, backed by tanks and heavy weapons, have rapidly approached the Eritrean border in recent days, while Eritrea reportedly sent thousands of its own soldiers across the border into northern Ethiopia. Both sides have expelled each other’s diplomats and severed relations, accusing each other of plotting war. U. S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio became the latest diplomat to plead for peace this week. In a phone call with Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, he cited the “heightened tensions” and urged all countries to “avoid cross-border incursions.” The region cannot tolerate more conflict, he told Mr.

Raiders’ Shingoose heading to World U17 - paNOW

“He’s doing a really good job as he’s continuing to navigate through there, and again, he’s a player who comes to the rink excited every single day. Like, I don’t think I ever see him not smiling; he loves being here, loves getting to work. He’s an extreme competitor anytime he’s on the ice, and I’m really looking forward to seeing him pull the Canadian jersey over his shoulders and get to work.” For the last two tournaments, the Raiders have been represented on at least one of the Team Canada teams playing in the tournament. In 2024, it was Riley Boychuk and Daxon Rudolph who won gold with Team Canada White, and last year Ben Harvey won silver with Team Canada White while Brock Cripps won gold with Team Canada Red. McDonald has seen first-hand how this tournament has affected players upon their return, and he hopes Shingoose follows that example once he returns. “I thought our guys did a tremendous job last year when they were there. Ultimately, Brock was with me on my side and Benny was on the other side, but you just watched how they both played and how they represented their country extremely well, and the same thing for Gooser.
