Israeli ad-tech firm helped place spyware on Al Jazeera devices - Al Jazeera

Citizen Lab investigation says dozens of Al Jazeera devices were infected by malware planted through advertisements. Israeli advertising technology company Discover-Tech helped place spyware on dozens of devices used by Al Jazeera and other companies. Al Jazeera Media Network on Thursday said it “condemns the spyware attacks targeting a number of its staff” and pledged to continue to “protect its employees and systems”. The network said targeting journalists is an “assault on press freedom” and called for those responsible to be held accountable. A Citizen Lab investigation, prompted by Al Jazeera’s initial internal probe into the issue, has confirmed that spyware from Candiru, an Israeli spyware firm blacklisted by the United States government in 2021 for its malicious cyber activities, was planted on these devices, using the first-known instance of “zero-click” targeted advertising. The nature of installing this spyware means that once an infected advertisement appears on a device, that device, too, is infected – spying on, and feeding, all the data and information available on that platform to those stealing it.

As bond yields rise, how to pick between a variable or fixed rate mortgage? - Global News

Whether you’re in the market for a new mortgage or are looking to renew, you’re likely paying attention to rising bond yields across the world, including here in Canada. The turbulence in the bond market may be changing how Canadians shop for their mortgages, some experts say. Historically, Canadians have preferred for the stability of monthly costs that a fixed-rate mortgage offers. However, rising bond yields have left some wondering if a variable rate mortgage might be a better bet for families trying to save money in the short term. Canada is currently in the midst of a significant wave of mortgage renewals, with more than one million households either renewing or close to renewing their mortgages this year.

Rural towns focus on retaining businesses, attracting investment ahead of Small Business Week - GX94 Radio

PREECEVILLE, Sask. – With Small Business Week approaching, leaders in rural Saskatchewan communities say economic development is increasingly about retaining existing businesses, filling service gaps and finding opportunities for sustainable growth. Representatives from Preeceville and Kamsack say their communities still see signs of business activity but face challenges common to many small towns, including aging infrastructure, vacant properties, and the high cost of new construction. In Preeceville, Chamber of Commerce president James Bodnar said economic development efforts are largely focused on maintaining the businesses already operating in the community. "I think most of what's going on is kind of holding our own and not losing businesses," Bodnar said. The town has seen some new commercial activity over the past year, including an accounting firm establishing an office in a former law office building. Another building was recently purchased, although plans for the property have not yet been announced.

Gold holding overnight gains above $4,100 even as US PPI rises 6.3% in September - Kitco

(Kitco News) - After a solid overnight rally, rising inflation fears are limiting gold’s recovery Thursday, as higher producer prices show that the growing threat is unlikely to abate anytime soon. The U. S. headline Producer Price Index (PPI) jumped 1.3% in September, following August’s revised 0.5% increase, the U. S. Labor Department announced Thursday. The latest headline data was significantly hotter than expected, as economists had forecast a 0.6% increase. “The September increase is the largest advance since rising 1.7 percent in March 2022,” the report said. Over the last 12 months, headline wholesale inflation increased 6.3%, above the expected 5.3% rise. The report noted that this was the biggest annual increase since December 2022. Core PPI, which strips out volatile food and energy costs, rose 0.7% last month, above economists’ consensus forecast of 0.3% and following August’s upwardly revised 0.3% increase. Annual core PPI rose 5.0%, above consensus estimates of 4.4%. The gold market is holding on to its overnight gains above $4,100 an ounce. Spot gold last traded at $4,151.90 an ounce, up more than 1% on the day.
