Oct. 14, 2026 2:09 PM PT Folk music legend Joni Mitchell became a U. S. citizen on Tuesday, the end of “a journey that began 62 years ago,” she wrote on social media. Mitchell, 82, on Wednesday posted a photo of herself on X standing in front of a large U. S. flag while holding a smaller one. She also included a four-second video of the citizenship ceremony in which hoots and applause are heard after the administrator calls out, “Joni Mitchell, Canada.”She was born Roberta Joan Anderson on Nov. 7, 1943, in Fort Macleod, Alberta, Canada, to Bill, a grocer, and Myrtle, a schoolteacher, according to her official site. This Bird Has Seen Some Things—and the Photo Just Won an Award - Gizmodo
South African photographer Ernest Porter said he was “delighted” to capture this scene of an oxpecker cleaning its bill against a rhino’s skin. The bird feeds on the insects that infest the rhinos’ skin, which is why the red-billed oxpecker’s name in Swahili, askari wa kifaru, means “the rhino’s guard.” I’ll take Porter’s word for it, but I honestly can’t help but think that the oxpecker looks like it’s just plopped against the rhino, staring blankly into the void—so, basically, me on a Wednesday afternoon. Jokes aside, Porter’s lovely photograph was designated as “Highly Commended” in the bird category for this year’s Wildlife Photographer of the Year award, hosted by the U. K. Natural History Museum (NHM). On its 62nd year, the competition has attracted a record-breaking 65,403 entries from 121 countries, and a panel of judges selected the winners across 19 categories. You can see the entire gallery of winners and finalists here. Voting for the People’s Choice Awards is still open, which you can check out here. In the meantime, here are some of our favorite—sometimes relatable—entries from the gallery.

Salt Lake City’s massive downtown sports district gets its big reveal. Take a look. - The Salt Lake Tribune
Smith Entertainment Group released renderings for the planned district on Wednesday. (Smith Entertainment Group) Renderings of the downtown sports, entertainment, culture and convention district. Smith Entertainment Group released renderings of its downtown sports, entertainment, culture and convention complex Wednesday. Demolition is scheduled to begin in February, with work continuing into March. The project will be completed before the 2034 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. These renderings offer the best look yet at what’s to come for the district. The new district will allow for a pedestrian walkway from City Creek Center to a new east-facing entrance at the Delta Center. “We’re creating a walkway all the way through, and a paseo that connects the culture, convention, and sports and entertainment, all together with a central gathering place where families and people can come, experience local food, experience iconic brands, and really have a cool place to go,” Ryan Smith, head of SEG, said in a video on X, previously Twitter. Next to the convention center will be a Live Nation concert venue that will seat 6,000 and host 80 to 120 concerts a year.

‘Misty Green’ review: Rosalind Eleazar is a revelation in uneven drama - Yakima Herald-Republic
Movie reviewSometimes, a great performance can shine through and light up a not-great movie. Such is the case with “Misty Green,” Chris Rock’s uneven drama about a once-successful Hollywood actor struggling to navigate her second act in an unwelcoming Los Angeles. Misty (Rosalind Eleazar) is unquestionably very talented, and won an Emmy years ago for a show called “The Red Eye,” but she has multiple strikes against her: She’s Black, female and growing older, none of which helps her in an industry that’s set up to award the opposite. And she is her own worst enemy; haunted by a past vaguely hinted at, she’s self-destructive to a fault, choosing drug-fueled nights out over studying her lines for auditions. Rock’s direction is tonally all over the place (an opening scene had me wondering whether we were actually watching a bad TV episode starring Misty), and his characters are an odd assortment of one-note stereotypes (Adam Driver as a bad influence; Anna Kendrick as a chatty best pal) and complicated people deserving more than the few lines they get (Daniel Kaluuya as Misty’s troubled brother).
