‘Whalefall’ Review: In The Gut Of The Sea - We Live Entertainment

If ever there were a movie to see without any knowledge whatsoever of what was to come, Whalefall would certainly prove to be one harrowing thrill ride. Now, I was quite aware of the premise going in. In fact, much of my high anticipation for this film was based entirely on what seemed like the level of effort going into making this impossible situation look as realistic as possible. How could one deal with being swallowed by a sperm whale? And what could a film do to maintain that level of tension for a reasonable runtime? The answers are more nuanced than some may expect, as Whalefall draws strength from its emotional core and strong performances from everyone involved, which support the amazing visuals of this thrilling adventure. That said, the various cinematic universes featuring Austin Abrams are having a rough go of it lately. Last month he was evading zombies by the skin of his teeth in Zach Cregger’s wildly enjoyable Resident Evil. Now, here he is as Jay Gardiner, an ordinary college kid whose grieving activity to help him deal with the death of his father (Josh Brolin) is upset by the craziest set of events that one could conceive of enduring.

‘Street Fighter’ Scoring $31M at Box Office as ‘You Can See Everything’ Rises and ‘Whalefall’ Sinks - The Hollywood Reporter

Street Fighter is leading the box office battle in its opening weekend as Elizabeth Holmes documentary You Can See Everything draws big crowds, while Whalefall has trouble making a splash. Coming in on the lighter side of Paramount Pictures’ projected sum, Street Fighter grossed $13 million on Friday, including Thursday previews, and will open with around $31 million domestically for the weekend from 3,575 North American theaters. Marking the first release in Paramount’s distribution deal with Legendary, the studio had been expecting a debut in the mid-$30 millions for director Kitao Sakurai’s feature adaptation of the Capcom video game. Noah Centineo, Andrew Koji and Callina Liang star in the $82 million-budgeted movie focusing on a combat tournament.
