If ever there were a movie to see without any knowledge whatsoever of what was to come, Whalefall would certainly prove to be one harrowing thrill ride. Now, I was quite aware of the premise going in. In fact, much of my high anticipation for this film was based entirely on what seemed like the level of effort going into making this impossible situation look as realistic as possible. How could one deal with being swallowed by a sperm whale? And what could a film do to maintain that level of tension for a reasonable runtime? The answers are more nuanced than some may expect, as Whalefall draws strength from its emotional core and strong performances from everyone involved, which support the amazing visuals of this thrilling adventure.
That said, the various cinematic universes featuring Austin Abrams are having a rough go of it lately. Last month he was evading zombies by the skin of his teeth in Zach Cregger’s wildly enjoyable Resident Evil. Now, here he is as Jay Gardiner, an ordinary college kid whose grieving activity to help him deal with the death of his father (Josh Brolin) is upset by the craziest set of events that one could conceive of enduring.

‘Street Fighter’ Scoring $31M at Box Office as ‘You Can See Everything’ Rises and ‘Whalefall’ Sinks - The Hollywood Reporter
Street Fighter is leading the box office battle in its opening weekend as Elizabeth Holmes documentary You Can See Everything draws big crowds, while Whalefall has trouble making a splash. Coming in on the lighter side of Paramount Pictures’ projected sum, Street Fighter grossed $13 million on Friday, including Thursday previews, and will open with around $31 million domestically for the weekend from 3,575 North American theaters. Marking the first release in Paramount’s distribution deal with Legendary, the studio had been expecting a debut in the mid-$30 millions for director Kitao Sakurai’s feature adaptation of the Capcom video game. Noah Centineo, Andrew Koji and Callina Liang star in the $82 million-budgeted movie focusing on a combat tournament.

James Cameron congratulates Avengers: Endgame's box office success with bonkers image - A.V. Club
Marvel Studios’ release of Avengers: Endgame: Encore was a shrewd gambit for a few reasons: It put the studio’s most successful film back in conversation right after the juggernaut success of Spider-Man: Brand New Day; it tided die-hards over with new footage ahead of December’s Avengers: Doomsday; and, perhaps most importantly, it raked in an additional $138 million for the film, reinstating its position as the worldwide box office champion over James Cameron’s Avatar. Cameron, who certainly doesn’t spend his precious time fretting about such matters as lifetime financial grosses and being the best in the world at stuff, recently expressed his congratulations to Marvel for once again overtaking his 2009 sci-fi film. “You are one of the people,” the director wrote (per The Wrap) in a composite image from Avatar, with Iron Man at the center of a welcoming Na’vi tribe. “Congratulations to Marvel and the #1 Avengers: Endgame: Encore for bringing moviegoers to the cinemas! – Jim Cameron.”

TikTok “Permanently Bans” the ‘Musk’ Film Account, Raising Suppression Fears (Exclusive) - The Hollywood Reporter
TikTok has banned the entire Musk film account, citing political content that violates its policies. The move, which comes just as the Alex Gibney’s investigation into Elon Musk expands to more than 470 screens across North America, raises concerns about Big Tech suppression that the very film seeks to expose. Distributor Bleecker Street was informed Friday afternoon a “permanent suspension” was coming. The entire page disappeared from TikTok’s platform shortly after. The film company had been planning to spend ad money to boost certain posts; that will no longer happen. A spokesperson for the distributor confirmed that TikTok reps had informed them of the suspension and noted “disappointment” in the timing. After grossing $70,000 in four theaters in New York and Los Angeles in its first weekend of release, Musk is now playing in dozens of cities this weekend. The spokesperson said the company is in the process of appealing the move; even a reversal, however, could still prove costly if it doesn’t come during a weekend window when many people are likely to see the film.
