Chaz Horton was a big deal in Edmonton in 1979. So big a deal that the sports reporter was cryogenically frozen until he was needed most. With the Oilers in “show me” mode with McDavid, that time is now. Hey Oilers fans, I was looking forward to the road trip to California. I mean, everyone knows the Golden State is 30 per cent sunshine, 28 per cent seafood buffets, 13 per cent Disney, 10 per cent hidden taxes, and 95 per cent California girls. I hoped the state hadn’t changed much since 1979. The media are travelling with the team most of the trip, so that should be wild. Since I was going away for several days, I got a dog sitter for Sue. My mailman, Max, said he’d keep an eye on my trailer. The gang at DFO Edmonton is getting used to having me around, and this trip will be a good bonding opportunity. I mean, it’s not every day your colleague is a 92-year-old from the past. Technically, I’m 92, but in reality I’m only 45 years old, and most people say my emotional capacity is at a 12-year-old’s level. That’s a compliment, right?

Doing the dishes and riding the subway? Why the royals keep trying to look relatable - CBC
It all seemed a bit prosaic, really, chatting about doing the dishes with her husband or riding on the subway with her daughter. But there was Catherine, Princess of Wales, telling seniors how she and Prince William share the washing-up duties, and a few days later, taking a trip on the London Underground with Princess Charlotte. Beyond that glimpse into their everyday lives, though, these recent moments reflect an attempt to deal with a longstanding and more fundamental challenge that is a priority for the monarchy: how to appear relatable to a public that lives far beyond royal walls. "The monarchy isn't trying to convince us that William and Catherine are ordinary people," royal historian Justin Vovk said in an interview. "It's about trying to convince us that despite extraordinary circumstances, they experience the same human concerns as everybody else. "Efforts to do that convincing have long been a priority for monarchies throughout Europe. How The Beatles found Ringo Starr at a Lincolnshire Butlin's - BBC
How The Beatles found their drummer at Butlin's5 hours agoKarl BirdIn SkegnessMichael Ochs ArchiveRingo Starr joined The Beatles in 1962 while he was playing Butlin's in SkegnessA Lincolnshire holiday camp played a little-known but crucial part in the birth of The Beatles. A young, bearded Ringo Starr was playing drums with Rory Storm and the Hurricanes at the Butlins in Skegness in the summer 1962 when Paul McCartney and John Lennon arrived to try and recruit him to the band. Bobby Thomson, who was bassist in the Hurricanes, recalls the duo arriving early one morning after driving all night from Liverpool. "I think that was the whole idea, to invite him to join the Beatles," he said. "Because I was with Ringo they didn't come out with it. They could have, it wouldn't have bothered me. "He said that a few weeks later in mid August the band were having breakfast when an announcement over the speaker system asked Starr to report to reception. He asked Thomson to come with him and the pair arrived to find a phone call from Beatles manager Brian Epstein asking if Starr would like to join the group.

'The Queen told us off for riding tricycles indoors' - BBC
'The Queen told us off for riding tricycles indoors'7 hours agoNeve Gordon-FarleighJonathan Birch/BBCLady Glenconner said it was a "privilege" spending her childhood at Holkham Hall in NorfolkOne of Princess Margaret's former ladies in waiting recalls being told off by a nine-year-old Queen Elizabeth II for riding a tricycle indoors at her Norfolk stately home. Lady Glenconner, who has known the Royal Family all her life, said it was a privilege growing up at Holkham Hall, which is her family's ancestral estate. Now aged 94, she remembers riding tricycles as a young child with the Queen's younger sister, Princess Margaret - and being chided by the future monarch. "We weren't meant to be there at all, going round and round, and down the steps of the Marble Hall came the Queen... she looked at us and she said 'Margaret, Anne, very very naughty, what are you doing'? " said Lady Glenconner. "Princess Margaret and I whirled round the hall one more time and we shot off on our tricycles screaming with laughter," she added.
