How The Beatles found their drummer at Butlin's5 hours agoKarl BirdIn SkegnessMichael Ochs ArchiveRingo Starr joined The Beatles in 1962 while he was playing Butlin's in SkegnessA Lincolnshire holiday camp played a little-known but crucial part in the birth of The Beatles. A young, bearded Ringo Starr was playing drums with Rory Storm and the Hurricanes at the Butlins in Skegness in the summer 1962 when Paul McCartney and John Lennon arrived to try and recruit him to the band. Bobby Thomson, who was bassist in the Hurricanes, recalls the duo arriving early one morning after driving all night from Liverpool. "I think that was the whole idea, to invite him to join the Beatles," he said. "Because I was with Ringo they didn't come out with it. They could have, it wouldn't have bothered me. "He said that a few weeks later in mid August the band were having breakfast when an announcement over the speaker system asked Starr to report to reception. He asked Thomson to come with him and the pair arrived to find a phone call from Beatles manager Brian Epstein asking if Starr would like to join the group.

Paul McCartney's plea over Beatles films: Don't make me 'little Paul' - BBC
/EPASir Paul McCartney is being portrayed by Paul Mescal in Sam Mendes' upcoming filmsSir Paul McCartney has recalled how he made a personal plea to the director of upcoming films about the Beatles to not portray him smaller than John Lennon as they were similar heights in real life. The 84-year-old is set to be portrayed by the Gladiator II star Paul Mescal in The Beatles – A Four-Film Cinematic Event, which is being directed by Sir Sam Mendes. But after being sent a recreation of the famous Abbey Road crossing, McCartney joked that he complained that Mescal was "markedly shorter" than the Lennon actor. He told the Good Hang with Amy Poehler podcast that Mendes sought to reassure him by saying they were all the same size, and it was "just the stride pattern". As well as Mescal, Barry Keoghan will play Sir Ringo Starr, Harris Dickinson has been cast as John Lennon, and Joseph Quinn will play George Harrison. Each film, due to be released in 2028, will focus on a different member of the legendary group.

Doing the dishes and riding the subway? Why the royals keep trying to look relatable - CBC
It all seemed a bit prosaic, really, chatting about doing the dishes with her husband or riding on the subway with her daughter. But there was Catherine, Princess of Wales, telling seniors how she and Prince William share the washing-up duties, and a few days later, taking a trip on the London Underground with Princess Charlotte. Beyond that glimpse into their everyday lives, though, these recent moments reflect an attempt to deal with a longstanding and more fundamental challenge that is a priority for the monarchy: how to appear relatable to a public that lives far beyond royal walls. "The monarchy isn't trying to convince us that William and Catherine are ordinary people," royal historian Justin Vovk said in an interview. "It's about trying to convince us that despite extraordinary circumstances, they experience the same human concerns as everybody else. "Efforts to do that convincing have long been a priority for monarchies throughout Europe.
