The City of Montreal announced on Sept. 29 that the the cross would go dark for one year for restoration, but it was not made clear that the iconic structure would disappear from the skyline entirely. The 33-metre cross remains onsite but has been lowered to a standing position on the ground — one of the very few times this has occurred since it went up in 1924.

The cross’s lightbulbs are being swapped for LED lighting that can be dimmed to reduce energy consumption and light pollution, and some steel parts are also being replaced. The restoration work also includes painting and landscaping.

A moment during Jay-Z’s recent concert in Paris summed up where soccer sits in culture today

There was a moment during Jay-Z’s recent concert in Paris that, for me, pretty much summed up where football sits in culture today. There wasn’t a ball being kicked. There wasn’t a match being played. Jay-Z walked onto the stage at the Stade de France wearing a one-of-a-kind, black-and-white, football-inspired shirt — by Louis Vuitton, designed by Pharrell — with the number 30 on the back marking 30 years since Reasonable Doubt.
