Tesla Powerwalls did most of the heavy lifting as California’s home batteries set a new grid record last week. On October 6, more than 85,000 Powerwall owners sent over 600 MW to the grid, the bulk of a combined 745 MW dispatch that Sunrun announced today.

That’s 28% more than the 580 MW record the two companies set less than a month ago. And it’s bigger than most gas peaker plants in the state.

PGE gets it: electric semi trucks provide HEAVY DUTY backup for the grid [video]

Oregon utility Pacific General Electric (“PGE”) is highlighting the environmental, health, and grid benefits to electrifying medium- and heavy-duty commercial trucks, calling the battery-backed big rigs “batteries on wheels.” Earlier this month, Oregon hosted its first, fleet-focused electric ride-and-drive event, bringing everything from Class 8 electric semi trucks and medium-duty “last mile” delivery trucks to battery-powered equipment assets like wheel loaders and excavators together in one place so the state’s fleet operators (and fleet buyers) could experience the latest generation of commercial EVs for themselves.

They Won The War On Door Handles, Now China's Taking Aim At Touchscreens

Classic gems, tasteful customs, legendary supercars - for Silvian, they're all fair game. He's been in love with cars and motorcycles for as long as he can remember, so it made perfect sense to eventually turn that passion into a full-time writing career. Around six years and more than 3,000 articles later, he is still going strong and doesn't plan on hitting the brakes anytime soon. We all know China doesn’t take kindly to those pesky pop-out door handles, having mandated an all-out ban back in February. It will come into effect on January 1, 2027, and Chinese lawmakers at the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) aren’t planning to hang up the gloves just yet. As a matter of fact, the door handle saga might’ve been just the warm-up. MIIT’s crosshairs are now aimed at a trending feature we really wouldn’t mind seeing less of – annoyingly large touchscreens prone to distracting the driver. Quite frankly, we’re more than happy to cheer them on in this regard, and others may want to consider taking this particular page out of China’s rulebook.

Video Games Can't Fix Your Car, But They Are Getting Better At Teaching You How Cars Are Put Together

With prices going up on, well, everything, having the ability to work on your own car (as long as the electronics allow for it) is a big money saver. There's a decent segment of individuals who can't do these things on their own, though, and it's possible, video games can help their journey to learn. Former Jalop Andrew Collins brought up the concept in 2020 with a video game called "Wrench," a grease-less automotive simulator that let you get your virtual hands dirty fixing cars in VR. A similar game released in 2021 called "Car Mechanic Simulator. " Now in 2026, "Wrench" has returned in a much more mature and updated version. YouTuber TalksWithNoise took to testing the concept in real time with a recent video, "I Tried Using a Video Game to Fix My Miata. "

I’ve Become Obsessed With Model Trains, And It’s Already More Expensive Than Some Car Repairs Are

Like any lifelong railfan, I’ve been addicted to trains since I was a kid. I can prattle on all day about my favorite Chicago Metra locomotive, or about how Chicago became the rail capital of America. Usually, I just use The Autopian as my outlet for the thoughts rattling around in my brain. Recently, I finally took my enthusiasm down to the small scale. In doing so, I’ve discovered that tiny trains are gloriously fun, but also ludicrously expensive. I think I’ve spent more on scale trains than I have on my last car repair. I don’t know when the exact moment was that I fell in love with trains, but I do know it happened in my childhood. One of my favorite things to do as a kid was to watch Wisconsin Central freight trains passing through Lake County, Illinois. The images of those red and yellow locomotives remain burned into my memory more than two decades later. Nowadays, I find myself going to that same depot in Antioch, only now the trains are emblazoned with Canadian National logos.

The Answer To Balancing Your Budget With High Gas Prices Is A Costco Date Night

We may receive a commission on purchases made from links. Life is expensive and only getting more so with each passing day. It's like you're always stuck in second gear. Your job's a joke, you're broke, etcetera. Recently, my favorite way to turn a day around, spend some time with my loving spouse, and not deplete my wallet is to drive to the nearest Costco. No matter what state you're in (geographically, financially, or emotionally), the Costco food court can be a shining beacon of anti-inflationary eating, as you walk in and grab a glorious quarter-pound tube of meat smushed into a moist white bread envelope for just one dollar and fifty cents. That's not all, though, as the Costco Hot Dog also comes with a refillable container for Coca-Cola products.
