Contract negotiations have dragged out the start of the 2026-27 season for Detroit Red Wings’ defenseman Simon Edvinsson. The 23 year old is looking for the first deal after his entry-level contract, which saw him rise into a top-four role on the Red Wings’ blue line. Disagreements in salary have pushed negotiations into mid-October despite Edvinsson being offered short-, mid-, and long-term options. That stall pushed Edvinsson to return to Sweden for training and even request a trade away from the Red Wings. Detroit reportedly has no interest in honoring that request, interim general manager Shawn Horcoff told Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press.
Detroit’s decision will lock the team into negotiations with Edvinsson. The market for young defenders boomed over the summer. Three defenders age 23-or-younger signed contracts with an annual average value above $7MM – Los Angeles’ Brandt Clarke, Calgary’s Simon Nemec, and Anaheim’s Pavel Mintyukov. All three defenders signed for five-years, while Philadelphia’s Jamie Drysdale signed a four-year deal carrying a $6.5MM cap hit.

After signing Alex DeBrincat to a contract extension, the Detroit Red Wings find themselves needing to tick the next item on the docket with just over 16 million dollars in cap space left for the season so far. The reality of the NHL and its salary cap rise is that the floor for your best players today is going to often outpace the ceiling of the stars of the literal last year. Detroit has managed to negotiate some of the most team-friendly deals in the league over the last few years, and that includes DeBrincat’s $13 million AAV contract signed earlier this week.

Elliotte Friedman shares update on Edvinsson, Larkin - Octopus Thrower
It seems like there's a new update on Dylan Larkin and Simon Edvinsson every day. Whether it's conflicting reports or a frustrating rehash of the situation, it seems like the Detroit Red Wings keep getting media attention for all the wrong reasons. As of right now, the Red Wings are navigating two stalemates: one with Simon Edvinsson's contract extension, and the other with Dylan Larkin's trade request. Both seem to have stalled out in recent weeks. Both have invited a feedback loop of sorts with information circulating and recirculating among insiders. This time around, Elliotte Friedman of the 32 Thoughts Podcast has some updates regarding Larkin and Edvinsson -- some good, some more of the same. Where the Red Wings are with EdvinssonBy far the most interesting update comes from what Friedman has heard regarding Edvinsson. When last we left off, Edvinsson had mentioned he would "prefer" a trade out of Detroit. In his most recent press conference, interim GM Shawn Horcoff stated that he has "zero interest" in trading Edvinsson. "I want to keep him," Horcoff added. "Nothing's changed on my part. Simon is someone really hard to come by.

Major Development In Simon Edvinsson Trade Rumors - NHL Trade Rumors
Teams around the NHL have been lining up to have a chance at pitching the Detroit Red Wings on a Simon Edvinsson trade. The latest news, however, from Wings GM Shawn Horcoff should put all that talk to rest. Shawn Horcoff: “I have zero interest in trading Simon Edvinsson”— Max Bultman (@m_bultman) October 14, 2026 I have zero interest in trading Simon Edvinsson. Not something I'm entertaining. We want to sign him. This emphatic statement shutting down trade talks comes despite the report that emanated out of Sweden last week, where the unsigned RFA defenseman was said to have a "preference" to be dealt rather than to re-sign in Detroit. Edvinsson, unsigned all summer mostly because the Red Wings didn't have a GM in place to handle that sort of thing, made a magnanimous gesture by attending training camp anyway on a PTO. Edvinsson recently returned from Sweden, but no agreement is in sightBut when camp was over, and the two sides were nowhere close to a deal, his locker was removed from the Red Wings' room, and Edvinsson was no longer around the team. He left for Sweden shortly thereafter. He just returned to North America this week to continue training on the East Coast.

Red Wings’ Horcoff shuts down Edvinsson trade rumours: ‘Not something I’m entertaining’ - TSN
Detroit Red Wings interim general manager Shawn Horcoff said Wednesday he has “zero interest” in trading Simon Edvinsson as the restricted free agent remains unsigned more than two weeks into the season. “Not something I’m entertaining,” Horcoff said of moving the defenceman, per Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press. “We want to sign him.”TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun reported last week that the Boston Bruins are among the at least 10 teams that have inquired on Edvinsson’s availability on the trade market. Horcoff said Wednesday he remains open-minded on contract options and remains in regular contact with Edvinsson’s camp. Edvinsson moved to back to Sweden in late September after spending training camp with the Red Wings, though TSN Hockey Insider Chris Johnston reported Tuesday he has since returned to North America to continue his training. The two sides have until Dec. 1 to reach a deal before Edvinsson becomes ineligible to play in the NHL this season. Finding a deal with Edvinsson was part of the tasks left to Horcoff as he was promoted in the wake Steve Yzerman’s decision to move into an advisor role this summer.
