After signing Alex DeBrincat to a contract extension, the Detroit Red Wings find themselves needing to tick the next item on the docket with just over 16 million dollars in cap space left for the season so far.
The reality of the NHL and its salary cap rise is that the floor for your best players today is going to often outpace the ceiling of the stars of the literal last year. Detroit has managed to negotiate some of the most team-friendly deals in the league over the last few years, and that includes DeBrincat’s $13 million AAV contract signed earlier this week.

Elliotte Friedman shares update on Edvinsson, Larkin - Octopus Thrower
It seems like there's a new update on Dylan Larkin and Simon Edvinsson every day. Whether it's conflicting reports or a frustrating rehash of the situation, it seems like the Detroit Red Wings keep getting media attention for all the wrong reasons. As of right now, the Red Wings are navigating two stalemates: one with Simon Edvinsson's contract extension, and the other with Dylan Larkin's trade request. Both seem to have stalled out in recent weeks. Both have invited a feedback loop of sorts with information circulating and recirculating among insiders. This time around, Elliotte Friedman of the 32 Thoughts Podcast has some updates regarding Larkin and Edvinsson -- some good, some more of the same. When last we left off, Edvinsson had mentioned he would "prefer" a trade out of Detroit. Red Wings Have No Interest In Trading Simon Edvinsson - Pro Hockey Rumors
Contract negotiations have dragged out the start of the 2026-27 season for Detroit Red Wings’ defenseman Simon Edvinsson. The 23 year old is looking for the first deal after his entry-level contract, which saw him rise into a top-four role on the Red Wings’ blue line. Disagreements in salary have pushed negotiations into mid-October despite Edvinsson being offered short-, mid-, and long-term options. That stall pushed Edvinsson to return to Sweden for training and even request a trade away from the Red Wings. Detroit reportedly has no interest in honoring that request, interim general manager Shawn Horcoff told Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press. Detroit’s decision will lock the team into negotiations with Edvinsson. The market for young defenders boomed over the summer. Three defenders age 23-or-younger signed contracts with an annual average value above $7MM – Los Angeles’ Brandt Clarke, Calgary’s Simon Nemec, and Anaheim’s Pavel Mintyukov. All three defenders signed for five-years, while Philadelphia’s Jamie Drysdale signed a four-year deal carrying a $6.5MM cap hit.
