I've traveled to over 100 countries on my own. I'd recommend these 5 destinations to first-time solo travelers. - Business Insider

After visiting over 100 countries on my own, Italy is one of my favorites. On my 36th birthday, I crossed the border from Uganda into Rwanda, commemorating my 100th country visited as a solo traveler. It was a gift — literally — to have this happen on my birthday, but also a huge feat for me. I took my first solo trip when I was a 25-year-old bartender in New York City. Since then, I've been all over — from popular tourist destinations to off-the-beaten-path destinations like rural Madagascar and tiny islands like Jeju and Nevis — documenting my ventures on my blog, No Man Nomad, along the way. After being privileged enough to see so many corners of the world, I can say with confidence that destinations are simply better suited for new solo travelers. If I had to start this wild, wacky journey all over again, here are five destinations I'd consider for a first-time solo trip.

I've traveled to 110 countries. There's one thing I make sure to do in every place I visit. - Business Insider

I've traveled to 110 countries, and I try to learn and make something wherever I go. A few years ago in Gyumri, Armenia, a guide led me past the souvenir stalls and into an artist's studio called Varem Marem. For the next 45 minutes, I made a miniature traditional Armenian door from plaster using a mold, then painted it to turn it into a fridge magnet. I'm not crafty, and it was more abstract than intended, but I was hooked before the paint had dried. The experience cost about $10, and the magnet is still on my fridge. After most of my trips to 110 countries, I came home with shot glasses and keychains. Since Gyumri, I look for a small class on every trip, where I can learn from locals and make something I'll take with me. It's nice that the skills I learn and things I make keep getting used after I get home
