Elbows down: We no longer own Joni Mitchell, and maybe we never did - The Globe and Mail
Open this photo in gallery:At the Juno Awards this spring in Hamilton, Mitchell received a lifetime achievement award from Prime Minister Mark Carney. Peter Power/The Canadian PressAccording to her 1971 song A Case of You, Joni Mitchell drew a map of Canada on the back of a cartoon coaster in the blue light of a television screen. “Oh, Canada,” the Alberta-born daughter of a Royal Canadian Air Force lieutenant sang. I always wondered what a cartoon coaster was exactly. Now one might wonder where Mitchell puts herself on the map of Canada. On Tuesday, the legendary singer-songwriter became a U. Unlike Michael Che, SNL UK's Weekend Update has lots to say about Shane Gillis - A.V. Club
Further widening the perceived boldness gap between the U. S. and U. K. iterations of Saturday Night Live‘s fake news Weekend Update segment, SNL UK‘s Ania Magliano didn’t hold back about the American show’s widely criticized booking of third-time host Shane Gillis last week. In contrast to U. S. Update anchor Michael Che’s diplomatic and/or issue-dodging lack of response to Gillis calling women “whores” for wearing shorts during his monologue (Che essentially says he was too busy promoting his new Netflix special to think about it) Magliano used her desk time to do a double-shot of jokes aimed at right at Gillis. In a story about an Oktoberfest amusement ride giving out free bike shorts to female riders to guard against creepy men taking upskirt photos, Magliano, with her signature cheeky camera stare-down, noted, “Wearing the gym shorts will protect women from being upskirted, but it does make them vulnerable to something much worse.” The punchline flash of a mid-monologue photo of Gillis brought knowingly uproarious cheers from the English studio audience.
