Spatial map of the lung reveals cellular mechanisms driving damage and fibrosis in severe COVID-19 - Medical Xpress

A lung affected by deadly forms of COVID-19 not only loses essential cells for breathing but also undergoes profound changes in its internal organization and the way its cells communicate with each other. A study involving the Sant Pau Research Institute (IR Sant Pau), published in Nature Communications, has created a spatial map of this transformation and identified some of the molecular mechanisms that accompany the progression of lung damage and fibrosis.

Slow down a honey bee stinging and you see impressive mechanisms at work - CBC

ScienceNew research is showing what makes honeybee stings an effective, self-driving weapon. High speed cameras reveal how the stinger uses a double-piston that pumps up and down to drive it deeper while delivering its poison. New research slows down and shines light on a fatal defense mechanismAnand Ram · CBC News · Posted: Oct 12, 2026 3:00 PM EDT | Last Updated: October 12Listen to this articleEstimated 5 minutesThe audio version of this article is generated by AI-based technology. High speed videography of an experiment captures how a western honey bee's stinger embeds itself deeper. (Ramirez Esquivel et al. 2026)The stinger of a western honey bee (Apis mellifera) is a weapon of last resort, designed to embed itself and deposit venom in flesh — most often resulting in the worker bee's death. New research published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences is quite literally shedding light on what makes this defence mechanism so effective.

Retifanlimab Versus Avelumab for Metastatic Merkel Cell Carcinoma: Comparative Analysis Insights - DocWireNews

Results from a recent matching-adjusted indirect comparison (MAIC) analysis indicated clinical favorability of retifanlimab versus avelumab for the treatment of metastatic Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC), which investigators described as “a rare and aggressive skin cancer with poor prognosis and low survival rate. A team of researchers from Italy conducted the study and published their findings in Advances in Therapy. Both retifanlimab and avelumab are classified as monoclonal immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI) antibodies, and investigators highlighted that both medications are approved for the treatment of metastatic or locally advanced recurrent MCC. They explained that the goal of their research was to assess clinical outcomes of both ICIs via a MAIC analysis of data from the phase 2 POD1UM-201 trial and part B of the phase 2 JAVELIN Merkel 200 trial. Patient data from each trial were used in the analysis, with data from POD1UM-201 informing the retifanlimab group and aggregate data from JAVELIN Merkel 200 informing the avelumab treatment group. Investigators also underscored that the data cutoff of POD1UM-201 was July 2024.
