Jonathan Mummolo Tapped to Lead Center for Data-Driven Social Science - Princeton School of Public and International Affairs

As artificial intelligence continues to provide unparalleled and unprecedented access to information and analytic tools, Jonathan Mummolo believes the work of Princeton University’s Data-Driven Social Science (DDSS) initiative is more important than ever. “As with any transformative research technology, AI presents great opportunities, but also great risks,” Mummolo said. “DDSS is focused on providing resources to Princeton researchers to help harness these tools in social science research while maintaining care and rigor.”Mummolo, an associate professor of politics and public affairs whose research studies bureaucratic politics and political behavior, was named the interim director of DDSS in August. Under his leadership, Mummolo is positioning DDSS and its team of research software engineers to help Princeton’s social science community harness AI to answer important social questions with attention to the unique challenges social science presents, including data privacy, replicability, and computational obstacles associated with massive data sets such as video archives.

Israeli settlers attack European diplomats during West Bank olive harvest - Al Jazeera

Israeli settlers have attacked European diplomats, including a French mayor, near the Palestinian village of Taybeh in the occupied West Bank. The delegation was visiting Palestinian olive harvesters on Saturday when the Israeli attackers confronted the group. The attack comes a day after settlers assaulted a US journalist north of Ramallah. In Saturday’s incident, the settlers targeted Belgium’s consul general, French and Polish diplomats and Catholic representatives, Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prevot said. “A French mayor was assaulted and a Belgian vehicle damaged,” Prevot said, linking the attack to what he called Israel’s “illegal settlement policy” and pledging to push for further European Union sanctions. French mayor Bernard Baudoux, who was assaulted, told the AFP news agency that the violence suggests that “there is a tolerance on the part of the Israeli government” towards settler violence. Al Jazeera’s Nour Odeh, reporting from Ramallah, said the settlers surrounded the diplomats’ vehicles, pelted them with stones and smashed their windows.
