A Yale physicist — and IceCube member — salutes this year’s Nobel Prize winner - YaleNews
For physicist Reina Maruyama, the 2026 Nobel Prize in physics brought back warm memories of cold moments. The prize, awarded earlier this week, went to Francis Halzen of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, the principal investigator for the groundbreaking neutrino experiment IceCube, which is based at the South Pole. Launched officially in 1999 with an ambitious experiment proposal, the IceCube Neutrino Observatory, located deep beneath an ice sheet near the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station in Antarctica, would go on to discover high-energy neutrinos that originate in deep space and travel unimpeded through the universe. The experiment grew to include more than 450 researchers from 58 institutions in 14 countries. The IceCube Neutrino Observatory was completed in December 2010, ahead of schedule. Physicist Reina Maruyama, a member of the collaboration, is shown helping to hold the celebration banner.

Israeli settlers attack European diplomats during West Bank olive harvest - Al Jazeera
Israeli settlers have attacked European diplomats, including a French mayor, near the Palestinian village of Taybeh in the occupied West Bank. The delegation was visiting Palestinian olive harvesters on Saturday when the Israeli attackers confronted the group. The attack comes a day after settlers assaulted a US journalist north of Ramallah. In Saturday’s incident, the settlers targeted Belgium’s consul general, French and Polish diplomats and Catholic representatives, Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prevot said. “A French mayor was assaulted and a Belgian vehicle damaged,” Prevot said, linking the attack to what he called Israel’s “illegal settlement policy” and pledging to push for further European Union sanctions. French mayor Bernard Baudoux, who was assaulted, told the AFP news agency that the violence suggests that “there is a tolerance on the part of the Israeli government” towards settler violence. Al Jazeera’s Nour Odeh, reporting from Ramallah, said the settlers surrounded the diplomats’ vehicles, pelted them with stones and smashed their windows.
