Paul George paced Boston with 38 points, seven three-pointers, five rebounds, three assists, and five steals, while Derrick White added 17 points and eight assists in the loss. Detroit's 22-point comeback marked the largest opening-day comeback in the play-by-play era (since 1997-98) and the first comeback of at least 20 points on opening day since 1997. In his Celtics debut, George set a franchise record for most points in a Celtics debut, surpassing Kristaps Porziņģis (30 in 2023). He also became the first player since steals began being tracked in 1973-74 to record at least 35 points and five steals in his debut with a new team.
