Description

Today there's more content than ever, but sifting fact from fiction is getting harder. Misinformation spreads faster than corrections, extremists are organizing in new corners of the internet, and the business model that once sustained journalism has collapsed, leaving a vacuum bad actors are happy to fill. This is the full recording of Reality Check LIVE, a public conversation on May 21, 2026 hosted by The Tyee at SFU's Goldcorp Centre for the Arts in Vancouver. The night featured a keynote from investigative journalist Rachel Gilmore, known for her reporting on disinformation and far-right extremism in Canada, followed by an onstage discussion with Tyee senior editor Jen St. Denis and Mo Amir of This Is Vancolour, hosted by Tyee associate editor Harrison Mooney. They dig into how misinformation actually spreads, what it takes to report on extremism, and what role independent media can still play in a fractured information landscape. This event is part of The Tyee's Reality Check project, a reporting initiative on digital disinformation and online radicalization made possible by Tyee reader support. 🔗 More independent journalism from The Tyee: https://thetyee.ca 📩 Get our free newsletters, straight to your inbox: https://subscribe.thetyee.ca 💛 Become a Tyee Builder and help fund reporting like this: https://support.thetyee.ca Follow Rachel Gilmore's Bubble Pop Media: 📺 Subscribe on YouTube: https://youtube.com/@AtRachelGilmore 💬 Support her independent reporting on Patreon: https://patreon.com/rachelgilmore Thank you to our event partners, who made this conversation possible: Simon Fraser University, the Canadian Media Guild, A Better Life Foundation, Faculty Brewing and Enotecca Wines.
