Description
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi is seeking parliamentary approval to authorise support for Saudi Arabia against the Houthis, an armed group also known as Ansar Allah. It follows weeks of strikes on Saudi infrastructure, including multiple attacks on Riyadh’s King Khalid Airport that killed at least 17 people. Saudi authorities have blamed the Houthis. Sisi said it is “absolutely inconceivable” to see Saudi Arabia harmed, and urged everyone in the Gulf to stop the war. Hussein Haridy, a former Egyptian diplomat speaking from Cairo, says Sisi’s message is meant to deter the parties attacking Saudi Arabia, warning them that Egypt stands by Riyadh if they escalate. Haridy says Egypt’s main concern is to stop the escalation by the Iran-backed armed group, and stresses that any deployment would be defensive. He says Egypt must be prepared, in cooperation with the Saudi army, to take any action to defend Saudi Arabia and deter the Houthis, but leaves military details to the two armies.
