Dunstone outduels Casper in fiery showdown at Co-op Invitational - The Grand Slam of Curling
By Jonathan Brazeau VICTORIA — Sparks and fist pumps were flying when Matt Dunstone delivered his final shot against Danny Casper, scoring two points for an intense 8-7 win Thursday at the GSOC Co-op Invitational. Dunstone improved to a 2-1 record (six points) in the season’s first Grand Slam of Curling tournament at Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre. With four seconds left on his thinking time clock, Dunstone nailed the soft bump into the quarry to score the winning deuce that fired up the team and the crowd. "Awesome. That was a game I thought we deserved to win, for sure," Dunstone said. "A bad pick in six, and then I had a bad miss on my last in seven to let him back into it. But to come back with a big shot, fun way to end it. " As Dunstone alluded to, hits and misses highlighted the earlier stages of the match. Casper misfired a runback in the first end to put two points in Dunstone's pocket with one shot to go; however, the Winnipeg skip couldn't add a third rock to the count, tapping and rolling too far. That lost point came back to hurt. Casper chiselled out Dunstone’s shot rock in the second to score three points and take the lead as the back-and-forth chase was on.

Bo Horvat had the lone shot on the power play. Trailing 1-0, the Senators tied the game late in the second on a 2-on-1. Warren Foegele broke in and made a cross-ice pass to Greig who beat Varlamov high stick side. New York opened the scoring with 11.2 seconds remaining in the period when Maccelli stripped Pinto of the puck at Ottawa’s blueline, took two strides and wristed a shot past Ullmark. Artem Zub made his season debut Thursday, assisting on Greig’s goal. The Senators defenceman hadn’t played since sustaining a knee injury in Game 1 of the first round of last season’s playoffs.

Power scores in overtime as Sabres rally past Leafs; Tavares leaves game early - TSN
TORONTO — Owen Power had the overtime winner as the Buffalo Sabres reeled off three unanswered goals to rally past the Toronto Maple Leafs 5-4 on Thursday. Jack Quinn had a pair of goals for Buffalo (4-3-1) before Dennis Gilbert and Mattias Samuelsson scored in the third to tie it 4-4. Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen stopped 26 shots in net for the win. Kirill Marchenko had a hat trick, the fifth of his career, in his 300th NHL game to give Toronto (3-3-2) a 4-2 lead. Auston Matthews opened the scoring and John Tavares added two assists before the Sabres battled back in the third. Sergei Bobrovsky made 29 saves for the Maple Leafs. Marchenko was traded by the Columbus Blue Jackets to Toronto on Sept. 28, just before the season began and had only scored once in a Maple Leafs sweater before Thursday’s game. Tavares left the game early in the third after he collided with Buffalo forward Josh Norris. The former Toronto captain appeared to favour his left leg as he skated off the ice.

New York Rangers vs. New Jersey Devils - NHL Game Recap - October 15, 2026 - CBS Sports
NEWARK, N. J. (AP) Evan Rodrigues scored with 29.6 seconds left in the first period to begin a barrage of four goals in just over five minutes, and the New Jersey Devils rolled over the New York Rangers 7-1 on Thursday night in the first matchup this season between the cross-Hudson River rivals. The bubble burst on the Rangers and Dylan Garand, the minor-league callup who had been spectacular in his first two starts - and wins - since franchise goaltender Igor Shesterkin was lost to a season-ending injury. Teammates did him few favors this time. Captain J. T. Miller, who was spectacular on a 5-on-3 penalty kill and had a strong offensive-zone shift near the end of the first, whiffed on a passing attempt that put the puck on Rodrigues' stick in prime scoring territory. Top-pairing defenseman Vladislav Gavrikov had a giveaway that led to Luke Hughes' first of two goals, which came 18 seconds out of intermission. Garand made a puck-handling mistake that led to Devils captain Nico Hischier scoring on a tap-in.
