Supreme Court of Canada debates constitutionality of Ontario redevelopment project - Courthouse News

A controversial act was implemented by the Ontario government to fast-track the project, but many claim it gives too much immunity to the province. OTTAWA (CN) — The revitalization of Ontario Place, a Toronto waterfront park, is being contested in front of Canada’s highest court on Thursday by a coalition of protesters who oppose the provisions put in place by the provincial government to quicken the project and reduce the costs, arguing they violate the Constitution Act of Canada. At the heart of these legal proceedings is the theme park Ontario Place opened in 1971. It once welcomed the public and served as an event and entertainment venue overlooking Lake Ontario, but it has been closed since 2012 because of declining attendance and financial difficulties. The new park would include a spa, a relocated Ontario Science Centre, a new shoreline and parking lots, and a detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police. In 2023, Premier Doug Ford presented the Rebuilding Ontario Place Act, which exempts the redevelopment project from certain dispositions such as environmental and heritage protections, and bypasses the noise regulations of the city of Toronto.

EV sales gathering momentum as more affordable electric options hit Canadian market - Clean Energy Canada

VANCOUVER — Graham Anderson, clean transportation program manager at Clean Energy Canada, made the following statement in response to the release of the latest EV sales data from Statistics Canada:“The latest EV sales numbers point to an EV market that’s gathering momentum. In August, EVs made up 13% of all new vehicles sold, a 47% increase over the same month the previous year. “Provincially, there are some particular bright spots. More than a quarter of cars sold in B. C. in August were electric, while Ontario hit a 10% market share—its highest since 2024. “Following a sluggish 2025 for EV sales, 2026 is looking to be a very different year thanks to the reintroduced federal rebate and a pretty significant uptick in more affordable EV models: 11 priced under $40,000 (including discounts from the rebate) as of this month, compared to just one in September last year. “Beyond the August sales numbers, there are signs of EV interest strengthening further through the fall—and could pick up even more if purchasers decide to take advantage of the $5,000 rebate before it drops to $4,000 next year.
