Brewers keep October magic rolling, on cusp of 1st World Series in 44 years - MLB.com

LOS ANGELES -- Just when Dodger Stadium started to believe again. Just when Will Smith’s two-run double had gotten Los Angeles off the mat. Just when the two-time defending champions were starting to look the part. There was Jake Bauers at the plate again, fouling off one pitch after another, refusing to die. If the Brewers are really going to do this -- and, after beating the Dodgers, 6-2, in Game 3 on Wednesday night, they’re now one win from reaching their first World Series in 44 years -- those images of Bauers will surely come to define this 2026 National League Championship Series. It was Bauers who turned in an epic 12-pitch battle with Yoshinobu Yamamoto in Game 2 on Monday in Milwaukee. Two days later, he was at it again. Bauers saw 11 pitches from Blake Snell in the top of the seventh inning. He fouled off the eighth, ninth and 10th of them. The 11th was a fastball that caught too much plate. Bauers turned on it and sent it to the right-field pavilion at Dodger Stadium for a two-run homer. His dugout erupted -- just about the only noise in an utterly stunned ballpark.

World Mushroom Day: From food to plastic replacement - news - Mongabay

A mushroom is analogous to a flower on a plant — it’s the reproductive organ of a fungus, which protects and distributes fungal spores. Mushrooms are critical part of our ecosystems. For humans and other animals, mushrooms are also food. And they may be part of the solution for food security and solving the plastic crisis.

‘Transformations Are Inevitable, Inequality and Exclusion Are Not’, Secretary-General Says at Launch of World Social Report 2026 - UN Meetings Coverage and Press Releases

Following is the text of UN Secretary-General António Guterres’ video message on the launch of the World Social Report 2026, titled New Economics of Social Inclusion: Making Transformations Work for All, in New York today:The World Social Report highlights a profound global imbalance.  On the one hand, rapid transformations are reshaping our world.  Digital technologies, artificial intelligence, renewable energy and demographic and economic transitions. On the other hand, these transformations are not working for all. Poverty and deprivation are widespread. Billions are locked out of opportunities because of income, gender, age, disability, ethnicity or the many other fault lines that undermine equality. Cascading global shocks — including the Middle East crisis — are making matters worse.  Food, fuel and fertilizer prices are surging.  And more than 100 countries have had to lower their growth forecasts this year alone. This report advances a New Economics of Social Inclusion. It reminds us that social inclusion is not only a moral or ethical imperative, it is an economic necessity. Inclusive societies are more productive, resilient and prosperous.

FIFA: New report exposes human rights failures at 2026 Men’s World Cup - sportanddev

A new report by the Sport & Rights Alliance and Football Supporters Europe finds FIFA put revenue ahead of human rights at the 2026 World Cup. The Sport & Rights Alliance and Football Supporters Europe have published a 50-page report, “Profit Over People: The 2026 FIFA Men’s World Cup”, assessing the tournament hosted across Canada, Mexico and the United States. It concludes that FIFA’s leadership did not put its own human rights commitments into practice, and that the drive for record revenue came at the expense of fairness and equality. The 2026 edition was the first men’s World Cup held under FIFA’s 2017 Human Rights Policy, with human rights criteria built into the bidding process and a dedicated human rights framework for the 16 host cities. What the report foundFans priced and locked out: record ticket prices, costly visas, a lack of affordable transport between host cities and US travel restrictions on more than 39 countries excluded many supporters, particularly those on low incomes, from the Global South or with disabilities.

Why Schwaller isn't feeling pressure at No. 1 in world - The Grand Slam of Curling

By Jonathan Brazeau VICTORIA — Top of the world to you, Yannick Schwaller. Schwaller and his squad — fourth Benoît Schwarz, second Sven Michel and lead Pablo Lachat-Couchepin — rose to No. 1 in the world rankings last month after opening the season with back-to-back wins at the Baden Masters and Euro Super Series. It was not only Schwaller's first time reaching the top of the charts, but also the first time any Swiss men's team achieved the feat. Considering all the great Swiss men's curlers over the years, including those related to him, like his father Christof Schwaller and uncle Andi Schwaller, that's quite the accomplishment. Now if only being No. 1 came with a trophy, a medal, or even a wedge of cheese. "It doesn't change the daily life, that's for sure," Schwaller said Wednesday during the GSOC Co-op Invitational. "But still, Benoît said yesterday something like, in the last 30 years, how many No. 1s were there? Maybe 10, 12, something like that. Not many did that, so it's cool to have done that. It's kind of like a check on the bucket list, but now work goes on.

Brewers stun Dodgers with back-to-back homers, move within one win of World Series berth - TSN

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Milwaukee Brewers hit the second-fewest home runs in baseball during the regular season, even as they topped the majors with 103 wins. Maybe they were saving their biggest swings for the Los Angeles Dodgers. Jake Bauers and Garrett Mitchell launched back-to-back homers off Blake Snell in the seventh inning, and the Brewers beat the Dodgers 6-2 on Wednesday to build a 3-0 cushion in the National League Championship Series. Jackson Chourio also went deep on the first pitch of the game to help the Brewers close within one win of their first NL pennant. Milwaukee was in the American League when the franchise reached its only World Series, a seven-game loss to the St. Louis Cardinals in 1982. “Job’s not finished yet,” Mitchell said. Game 4 is Thursday at Dodger Stadium, where the Brewers can become the first major league club to complete a postseason sweep after getting swept by that same opponent in the previous postseason. Los Angeles took all four games against Milwaukee in the NLCS last year. The Dodgers had just gone ahead 2-1 in the sixth inning before getting stunned by the Brewers in their three-run seventh.

Hot testing of Chinese SMR under way - World Nuclear News

Tests that simulate the temperatures and pressures which the reactor systems will be subjected to during normal operation are reportedly taking place at the ACP100 small modular reactor demonstration project, under construction at the Changjiang site on China's island province of Hainan. Hot functional tests involve increasing the temperature of the reactor coolant system and carrying out comprehensive tests to ensure that coolant circuits and safety systems are operating as they should. Carried out before the loading of nuclear fuel, such testing simulates the thermal working conditions of the power plant and verifies that nuclear island and conventional equipment and systems meet design requirements.

Kenya’s Ebola cases test preparedness beyond Nairobi - Al Jazeera

Nairobi, Kenya – Kenya’s response to an imported Ebola case has demonstrated its ability to mobilise a national response in the capital. But a suspected case in the northeastern county of Wajir has raised a critical question: whether the country’s preparedness measures can protect communities far from major hospitals, laboratories and transport hubs. The suspected case in Wajir tested negative, according to county officials, easing fears of wider transmission. Yet the incident highlighted the importance of local health facilities being able to recognise suspected infections, isolate patients safely and communicate reliable information to residents. For communities near Kenya’s borders, preparedness requires more than screening travellers at airports and official crossings. It also depends on trained health workers, appropriate protective equipment, functioning isolation facilities and clear referral procedures. Residents must know where to seek care and how to respond when health authorities raise the alarm.
