Federico Veronesi received the top honor of the 2026 Wildlife Photographer of the Year for his poignant black-and-white image of a female elephant carrying her deceased calf. The portrait represents a rare insight into animals’ habits we have yet to fully understand and demonstrates the power of timing and persistence in photography. Veronesi had been tracking elephants in the Huab River Valley of Namibia when he encountered some unusual drag marks on the earth. He eventually caught up with the family, and the adult emerged with the calf’s leg wedged between her trunk and tusk. “Behaviours centering on death have been observed in both Asian and African elephants, including vocalisations, guarding the dead, inspecting and handling bones, and carrying the deceased,” a statement says. “Some researchers suggest these behaviours could indicate an elephant’s journey to understanding death, while others interpret these actions as possible displays of grief.”

Terry Matalas made a big splash as showrunner for the third season of Star Trek: Picard, showing his love for Trek by reuniting the cast of The Next Generation for one more big adventure. When Paramount didn’t move forward with his hopes for the Star Trek: Legacy follow-up series, he moved on. But in a new interview, he makes it clear he is ready to return to Trek and shared a bunch of insights on how the heralded final season got made — and what nearly came after it. The new comments were made on the  Dropping Names with Brent and Jonny podcast, where hosts (and TNG co-stars) Brent Spiner and Jonathan Frakes reunited with Terry Matalas. Together, they shed a little light on what could have come next for Star Trek if he had been allowed to make his sequel series to Picard. The former Trek showrunner talk talked about how Legacy would dig into an interesting arc for Worf and his son Alexander and how Sir Patrick Stewart was keen to play a different role as Picard.
