Survivor 51 Recap: The Open Era's First Tribe Swap Puts Everyone In Danger - TVLine

Was it not the late, great Whitney Houston who sang, "Didn't we almost have it all? " And in "Survivor 51," we truly almost did. Wednesday's episode took one giant step backwards when Jeff corralled the castaways on a new beach to announce that it was time to (say it with me now): Drop! Your! Buffs! And while I'm typically all gassed up about an ol' switcheroo (I even spoke to "Survivor: Africa" winner Ethan Zohn about the show's very first tribe swap), reverting the game back to a three-tribe format is... not so exciting. Making matters worse, since Rob decided to quit the game last week, the three tribes are starting out with uneven numbers: six, six, and five. Going from a Tribal Council of 11 players to one with five or six? A frustrating development to an otherwise excellent season (so far).

6 books that speak to the enduring appeal of monsters - Yakima Herald-Republic

The Seattle Public Library loves to promote books and reading. This monthly column is a space to share reading and book trends from a librarian’s perspective. For Halloween season, these books explore our enduring fascination with monsters in new and surprising ways, from fresh takes on vampire tales to a bestiary that spans time and worlds. Monsters come in many forms and illuminate deeper truths about our fears and even our hopes. Portland author Keith Rosson infuses his horror novels with the sensibility and pacing of crime fiction. “Coffin Moon,” which was recently optioned for TV by Jessica Biel and Paramount, starts in 1975, when Vietnam veteran Duane Minor opens the Last Call Tavern in Portland, unaware that this event will set him on a collision course with John Varley, a vampire born on the gritty Seattle streets a century earlier. When Varley kills Duane's wife, Heidi, Duane and Heidi's adopted 13-year-old niece, Julia, become hellbent on revenge.

Taproot Theatre’s ‘Smoke on the Mountain’ returns to the stage - Yakima Herald-Republic

Theater reviewTo celebrate its 50th anniversary season, Taproot Theatre returns to an old friend: “Smoke on the Mountain,” the exceedingly wholesome gospel-bluegrass revue conceived by Alan Bailey and with a book by Connie Ray. Taproot first produced the show in 1992, and it’s been a frequent inclusion in its seasons over the years, along with sequels “Sanders Family Christmas” and “Smoke on the Mountain Homecoming,” each chronicling a singalong church service where a family band harmonizes on hymns, trades Bible-verse quotations and proffers their testimonies. Directed by Taproot co-founder Scott Nolte, “Smoke on the Mountain” moves off the mainstage and into the Isaac Studio Theatre for this go-round, running through Nov. 7. Plenty of shows preach to the choir, and “Smoke on the Mountain” is squarely aimed at the flock. Does a prewar Saturday night service at an Appalachian Baptist church sound appealing? Then you know where to go. Things don’t start smoothly at North Carolina’s Mount Pleasant Baptist Church, where the Rev. Mervin Oglethorpe (an appealingly skittish Joel Barkman) is assuring the congregation the evening’s performers will eventually arrive.

Chris Evans and Anya Taylor-Joy's New Netflix Movie Actually Isn't That Bad, It Turns Out - IGN

Sacrifice hits Netflix on October 16. Isn’t it nice when Netflix puts out a decent movie? Yes, the streaming juggernaut releases high quality efforts from auteurs like Scorsese and Del Toro, but then there’s the neverending parade of star-driven, empty calorie mediocrity; mostly paper thin comedy-action films with forgettable plots and vapid characters, whose only strengths come from the charisma of the actors playing them. At this point, Chris Evans is one of many likable actors who has made a few of these types of movies now, for multiple streamers, so it’s easy to assume Sacrifice will be another example. Yet lo and behold, this one actually feels like something with more commendable aspirations. Evans plays movie star Mike Tyler here, attending a climate charity event on a Greek island while attempting a comeback after a public meltdown a year earlier. However, the event is interrupted by a cult-like group of radicals, led by Joan (Anya Taylor-Joy), who take everyone hostage at gunpoint. And then… things actually go quite differently than you’d expect from a Netflix movie with this set-up and these stars.

IP Saves the Day On Streaming - The Entertainment Strategy Guy | Substack

(Welcome to my weekly streaming ratings report, the single best guide to what’s popular in streaming TV and what isn’t. I’m the Entertainment Strategy Guy, a former streaming executive who now analyzes business strategy in the entertainment industry. If you were forwarded this email, please subscribe to get these insights each week.)Before we get started, I wanted to highlight a new idea I saw from Real Good AI, proposing a ratings system for AI use. (H/T to Anthony Kaufman’s article highlighting this.) It would look something like this:In general, I think that this is a solid, middle-ground solution that should appease both the pro-AI camp (who love AI) and the anti-AI camp (who wants to know if what they’re watching didn’t come from humans). Regardless of your feelings on AI/LLMs—I’ll never use it for my writing—transparency is often the best solution to many problems. In general, I think way more media outlets need to be using way more AI disclosures. My quick “Yes and...” to this idea: what about ads? In particular, I hate it when I see or hear ads that are obviously AI-generated, but a person or voice says, “I used this product”. AI doesn’t use products!

Céline Dion Wears 67 Carats of Chanel Diamonds in Paris - Something About Rocks

Céline Dion appeared on stage last night (October 14th) at the Plenitude Arena in Paris wearing 67 carats of Chanel diamonds. Dion was wearing a Chanel Comète necklace in platinum and 18K white gold set with a total of 1,080 diamonds. The Comète necklace was recreated as a nod to the original necklace that Céline Dion wore at the 1997 Oscars red carpet and inspired by a 1932 design from Gabrielle Chanel’s one and only High Jewellery collection, “Bijoux de Diamants”. The design replicates a comet with its fiery tail curving around the neck like an inverted question mark without hooks or clasps, and is one of Chanel’s most recognisable high jewellery creations.

Most reboots are nostalgia slop. ‘Girls’ might be the exception. - Yahoo

Stop me if you've heard this one before: A beloved TV show or movie is being revived so those involved can get another moment in the sun (and another influx of cash) while its longtime fans rush to get a hit of sweet, sweet nostalgia. It's happening now with Lena Dunham's deeply millennial sitcom Girls, which is getting a five-episode limited-run revival involving all four of the girls: Dunham, Allison Williams, Zosia Mamet and Jemima Kirke, plus honorary girl, Andrew Rannells. Do I dare hope: Could this one actually be good? Reboots are dangerous in this day and age: there are so many of them and they often threaten to taint the memory of a once-cherished work. Take Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, which fans felt botched a favorite character, or And Just Like That, which was a straight-up hate-watch. Flip on any streaming service right now and you'll see a new one: There's the revived Scrubs on Hulu, the spun-off The Paper on Peacock, the rebooted A Different World on Netflix, and so on. But I, and many of my fellow fans online, feel cautiously optimistic about the new Girls. Here's my theory as to why.
