John Smoltz says quiet part out loud about Brewers embarrassing Dodgers in NLCS - ClutchPoints

John Smoltz shared his thoughts on the Dodgers' immense struggles against the Brewers in the National League Championship Series. The Milwaukee Brewers shocked the MLB world by sweeping the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League Championship Series. Milwaukee winning the series in competitive fashion wouldn't have been all that surprising, but getting the job done in only four games was impressive to say the least. Former MLB star pitcher John Smoltz, who was one of the broadcasters during the series, recently joined Flippin' Bats with Ben Verlander to discuss what went wrong for LA in the series. “Well the easy and lazy statement would be that they (Dodgers) got old,” Smoltz told Verlander. “But that's not fair. Getting old had nothing to do with hitting, it might have had something to do with defense… The Dodgers had to slug, they didn't slug. They had to hit with runners in scoring position, they didn't. They had three straight innings where they could have tied the game or taken the lead, they didn't. “Credit deserves on the other side, but when you're champions and you've been there, done that, that experience flip flops to you.

Are Leafs too messy – on the ice and behind the bench – to make playoffs? - Daily Faceoff

It was a night Kirill Marchenko says he’ll never forget. Who wouldn’t cherish scoring a hat trick in their eighth game playing for an Original Six franchise? But he couldn’t even muster a smile after the game Thursday night. Not when his Toronto Maple Leafs squandered a 4-2 divisional lead to their Atlantic Division rival Buffalo Sabres and fell 5-4 in overtime. In many ways, Thursday’s game was a microcosm of Toronto’s young season. The Leafs brought the Scotiabank Arena faithful to their feet early and often. Captain Auston Matthews, looking back to his superstar self, converted a deftly threaded Jack Roslovic pass to put Toronto ahead just 2:24 in. And Marchenko was spectacular, particularly on his first of three goals, a scintillating between-the-legs snipe on the power play.

Heat's Ryan Conwell: Team-high 22 points off bench - CBS Sports

Conwell posted 22 points (7-18 FG, 2-9 3Pt, 6-7 FT), nine assists, five rebounds and two steals over 32 minutes during the Heat's 125-124 loss to the Timberwolves during Saturday's preseason game. Conwell saw most of his playing time and production during the second half of Saturday's exhibition game while the starters rested. The rookie second-rounder has made a strong early impression during training camp, and if he can carry that momentum into preseason games, then he could force his way into a rotational role for the Heat for the 2026-27 season. Suns' Khaman Maluach: Limited in bench role - CBS Sports

Maluach closed with six points (3-5 FG, 0-3 FT, 0-1 3Pt), two rebounds and one block in 17 minutes during Monday's 109-107 preseason loss to Detroit. Maluach came off the bench in the preseason opener, perhaps a sign of what's to come once the regular season gets underway. While he did log more minutes than Oso Ighodaro, Maluach's production left a lot to be desired, particularly on the offensive end. Of the two players, Maluach likely has more upside when considering him with a late-round pick. However, managers should temper their expectations, at least until we have a decent sample size of what he is capable of during competitive NBA basketball.
