I’m supposed to be an impartial reporter of events, especially when it comes to a race like the Ironman World Championship.

But I really, really wanted American Taylor Knibb to win this year – not because we share the same nationality, but because we share the same philosophy. I think you, as a triathlete, share that philosophy, too.

Ironman Kona: Taylor Knibb wins redemptive world title after leader hits the wall in final mile - NBC Sports

A year ago, U. S. Olympian Taylor Knibb, struggling in 80-degree heat, helplessly sat on the Queen Ka’ahumanu Highway as Norwegian Solveig Løvseth passed her with two miles left to win the 140.6-mile Ironman Kona triathlon title. On Saturday, the roles reversed. Løvseth, having overtaken Knibb with five miles left of the iconic endurance race, began wobbling on Palani Road, just one mile from the finish of the closing marathon run, following a 2.4-mile swim and 112-mile bike. Løvseth came to a stop with seven tenths of a mile to go — after more than eight hours of racing on Hawaii’s Big Island. Knibb, meanwhile, had dropped to nearly two minutes behind Løvseth. She walked through an aid station. She vomited. Her manager wrote on a white board for her to see, “vomiting is normal.”

Taylor Knibb wins Ironman World Championship Kona in an all-time finish - Trek Race Shop

Taylor Knibb won Ironman World Championships in Kona in a finish that will go down in triathlon history. Knibb was leading the race with just under five miles to go in the marathon, but her pace had been gradually decreasing, and she was passed by 2025 winner Solveig Løvseth in a feed zone. Løvseth kept expanding her lead, gaining a gap of more than 1:30 over Knibb, who kept on motoring but seemed assured to finish second. But then with just over one kilometer remaining — just a handful of minutes left after more than eight-and-a-half-hours of racing — Løvseth’s race unraveled. She slowed. Her gait began to wobble. Age groupers began to pass the reigning champion. And finally, she had to sit. Her day was done, and Løvseth’s heartbreak became Knibb’s career-defining moment.

Taylor Knibb wins Ironman world title after leader collapses in dramatic Kona finish | Triathlon - The Guardian

American triathlete Taylor Knibb has won her first Hawaiian Ironman world title after one of the most dramatic finishes in race history. With a mile left, Norwegian defending champion Solveig Løvseth led Knibb by more than a minute and looked rock-solid, having taken the lead from her inside the final 10km of the 42.2km marathon run. But then Løvseth quickly developed a dramatic case of the wobbles and collapsed. Knibb passed her about a kilometre from the finish and the Norwegian eventually recovered from the meltdown to finish eighth. It recalled the 1995 race, when Paula Newby-Fraser collapsed within just 500m of her seventh win and was passed by Karen Smyers. In a twist of history, Smyers helped hold the winner’s tape for Knibb. Vincent Luis of France won the men’s race aged 37, on his debut. It was just his third Ironman-distance race after Luis won Olympic bronze at Tokyo in the mixed team relay and claimed the 2019 and 2020 world championship series titles. Taylor Knibb competes during the marathon leg of the Ironman World Championship in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, on Saturday.
