Expert Says Cyberattack Targeting Grocery Store Freezers in France Not Impossible in North America - VOCM
A food analytics expert says a cyberattack like the one that recently targeted grocery store chains in France is possible here. Some 700 food retailers in that country were struck earlier this week by hackers who remotely turned up the heat in thousands of coolers and freezers causing significant food losses – and even starting fires. Sylvain Charlebois of the Food Analytics Lab at Dalhousie University says similar cyberattacks have already occurred in this country, including one affecting Sobeys in 2022. “Most of our grocers have actually been cyberattacked already,” says Charlebois. He says Sobeys had to pay a ransom of $25 million at that time. “It is a real threat to our grocers and not just our grocers, but the entire food supply chain.”(VOCM News)Charlebois suspects that the incidents in France were precipitated by a ransom demand that the grocers refused to pay. He says grocers typically have a number of systems in place to protect their inventory, but there are still vulnerabilities.

‘They shouldn’t be surprised’: Nova Scotians take stand against major data centre project - Global News
A group of Nova Scotians gathered on the waterfront in Halifax on Saturday with a message for Premier Tim Houston: allowing the construction of a large data centre will be detrimental to the environment and the community. “These companies don’t have a lot of information that they’re able to give us, we don’t know what this is gonna look like, we already have wells that are drying up in the summertime. I don’t think we can afford to do this,” Megan Boudreau, one of the protest organizers, told Global News. Energy and infrastructure company, EverWind, announced on Friday $10 billion in private investment in a data centre campus at its existing Point Tupper site. The site would be leased and run by AI development company Anthropic, the creator of the AI assistant Claude. “Canadians are using Claude in growing numbers, and we want our infrastructure to be closer to the people who rely on it,” said Jacob Glick, head of Canada Public Policy with Anthropic.
