U.S. Treasury’s gold revaluation could restart the ‘debasement trade’ as yield pressures fade – UBP’s Kinsella - Kitco
(Kitco News) – Gold has likely seen the worst of its Treasury-yield-driven losses, and once the Iran situation improves and Fed rate hike expectations ease, the Treasury department itself could provide a new tailwind for bullion prices between now and year-end, according to Peter Kinsella, Head of Investment Services for the UK at Swiss private bank UBP. Kinsella noted that gold has traded lower since the Federal Reserve’s 25-basis-point rate hike in September. “The downward move has been rather muted, considering the huge rise in both nominal and real inflation-adjusted interest rates,” he said. “US 10-year yields have risen to highs of 5.30%, and 10-year TIPS yields (a proxy for real interest rate expectations) have risen to levels of just below 3%.”“Normally, we would expect gold to decline materially in such circumstances,” he wrote. “The modest decline suggests that gold–interest rate correlations have continued to wane.”Kinsella pointed out that throughout August and early September, investors continued to increase their exposure to gold, even as treasury yields continued to rise.

Alberta referendum expected to bring finality, but also more questions on separation - Global News
On Monday, Albertans vote on whether to stay in Canada or hold another binding referendum on quitting Canada. If the vote goes as polls suggest, a majority of Albertans will mark an X to stay in Confederation, and Premier Danielle Smith has said if that’s so, she expects everyone to accept it and move on. Leaders of the independence movement contest that. And political watchers are divided about whether separation — previously a fringe sentiment — will now be a prominent, permanent feature of Alberta’s political landscape, as in Quebec. Julian Castro-Rea, a political-science professor at the University of Alberta who studies the separation debates in Quebec and Alberta, believes as long as Alberta feels alienated from the Canadian capital — feeling that Ottawa benefits from Alberta’s resource economy without giving back — the movement will have fuel. “Even if the referendum is lost, the westernization will still be around, because it’s kind of a way which, traditionally, Albertans have related to the rest of Canada,” says Castro-Rea, who believes western alienation may remain indefinitely.
