The Porsche Mission S concept car revealed on Thursday is meant to point the way towards the carmaker’s future—one where a new flagship supercar above the 911 pushes the brand upmarket while strengthening ties to the company’s past. And that future, it seems, could include an old-fashioned row-your-own stick shift. During remarks at the launch event in New York City, Porsche CEO Dr. Michael Leiters stressed the new super sport car platform’s flexibility in terms of powertrain, specifically stating that it could be powered by either pure internal-combustion engines or hybrid ones … and, perhaps more interestingly, either manual or PDK-style automatic transmissions. “Customer demand will define what we build on this platform,” he said. Leiters ought to be trusted; not only is he the big man in charge at Zuffenhausen, but he also played no small role in the Mission S’s creation. But the concept draws from the automaker’s most iconic road and race cars, with clever bodywork and a thoroughly modern cabin featuring analog gauges.

And, as we learned today, a mid-engined supercar. “The Mission S provides a glimpse of the ideas and design features that will shape Porsche in the coming years,” said Leiters. “At the same time, the Mission S represents a mid-engined supersports car platform positioned above the 911—not as a one-off hypercar, but as a permanent and versatile addition to our customer offering.” Driver engagement is the aim, and I’d bet that “on your own” red button turns off a bunch of driver assists.
