2026 has been a significant year for video game movies, with numerous well-reviewed entries and several that have drawn strong box office returns. There’s even been an upset in my rankings: Resident Evil finally dethroned Mortal Kombat, which had held the top spot since 1995. For whatever reason, I seem to focus on this a lot, without really delving into Street Fighter. The 1994 film is a big dose of campy fun, held together by a fully committed Raul Julia (his final role) and an entirely miscast-but-in-a-perfect-sort-of-way Jean-Claude Van Damme. Over 30 years later, we get another attempt at a traditional take on the classic video game series (basically the always-popular Street Fighter II, with a few pulls from other entries), and the results are quite colorful. That’s meant in a good way. While there’s enough to say about whether or not this video game adaptation can go above and beyond when it comes to key cinematic elements, at the very least, the action choreography is solid, and enough care has been put into making the film look great both in terms of representation of its source material and as a movie in general.

James Cameron congratulates Avengers: Endgame's box office success with bonkers image - A.V. Club
Marvel Studios’ release of Avengers: Endgame: Encore was a shrewd gambit for a few reasons: It put the studio’s most successful film back in conversation right after the juggernaut success of Spider-Man: Brand New Day; it tided die-hards over with new footage ahead of December’s Avengers: Doomsday; and, perhaps most importantly, it raked in an additional $138 million for the film, reinstating its position as the worldwide box office champion over James Cameron’s Avatar. Cameron, who certainly doesn’t spend his precious time fretting about such matters as lifetime financial grosses and being the best in the world at stuff, recently expressed his congratulations to Marvel for once again overtaking his 2009 sci-fi film. “You are one of the people,” the director wrote (per The Wrap) in a composite image from Avatar, with Iron Man at the center of a welcoming Na’vi tribe. “Congratulations to Marvel and the #1 Avengers: Endgame: Encore for bringing moviegoers to the cinemas! – Jim Cameron.”
