The sisterhood at the heart of Sense and SensibilityOctober 16|Duration 1:51Stars Daisy Edgar-Jones (Elinor) and Esmé Creed-Miles (Marianne) discuss how their longtime friendship helped shape the bond between the Dashwood sisters. It is the eternal question of the prestige drama. Do we really need another period piece? Do we really need another Jane Austen adaptation? More specifically, do we need another version of Sense and Sensibility? For audiences familiar with director Ang Lee's 1995 Sense and Sensibility, the question might feel pointed.

‘Sense and Sensibility’ (2026) review: Daisy Edgar-Jones shines in adaptation - Yakima Herald-Republic

Movie reviewEvery beloved book lives forever in the mind of its reader, and sometimes if we’re lucky, it becomes a beloved movie, too. Jane Austen’s tale of two sisters, “Sense and Sensibility,” was made into a funny, lovely and entirely perfect movie about 30 years ago, adapted by Emma Thompson (who also memorably played older sister Elinor Dashwood) and directed by Ang Lee. I have watched Lee’s movie more times than I can say; it’s a perpetual source of comfort and joy. So it was with trepidation that I approached Georgia Oakley’s new “Sense and Sensibility,” adapted by Diana Reid — could genteel literary lightning strike twice? Well, not quite — the world is, apparently, not that generous — but the new movie brings plenty of pleasure of its own. Oakley’s version, plotwise, is more or less as equally faithful to Austen as Lee’s (though it does add a late scene from the book involving John Willoughby that gives his character some redemption).

Daisy Edgar-Jones reveals how a dog inspired Fiona Shaw’s portrayal of Mrs. Jennings in “Sense and Sensibility” - Yahoo

Key PointsDaisy Edgar-Jones reveals how Fiona Shaw created Mrs. Jennings for the 2026 Sense and Sensibility adaptation. The Normal People star tells Entertainment Weekly that Shaw made the "perfect" Mrs. Jennings. "Fiona is one of my favorite performers of all time," the actress says. Daisy Edgar-Jones will never forget the first time she saw Fiona Shaw step into the shoes of iconic Sense and Sensibility character Mrs. Jennings. Jane Austen's novel, published more than 200 years ago, follows sisters Elinor (Edgar-Jones) and Marianne Dashwood (Esmé Creed-Miles), whose lives change drastically after their father's death. Enter Mrs. Jennings, the gossipy widow who's lonely after marrying off her own two daughters. To pass the time, she tries to help the Dashwood girls find rich husbands. While Mrs. Jennings looks at it as matchmaking, others might call it meddling. Shaw, who is "a legend" in Edgar-Jones' eyes, made Mrs. Jennings "larger-than-life" for the 2026 adaptation, the Normal People star tells Entertainment Weekly. "Fiona is one of my favorite performers of all time," she adds — and working with her did not disappoint.

The New 'Sense and Sensibility' Surprised Me by Putting This Relationship Front and Center - PureWow

Guys, step aside•Published Oct 7, 2026Focus FeaturesLast year, a slew of Jane Austen adaptations were announced, among them my favorite book, Pride and Prejudice, coming to Netflix, and Sense and Sensibility, Austen's first novel that debuted in 1811, coming to theaters October 16. I was puzzled over the former, because Joe Wright's 2005 film starring Keira Knightley is absolute perfection. (Also, 2005? That's recent memory, but somehow still 21 years.) But as for Sense and Sensibility, the last movie adaptation was 1995's starring Emma Thompson, Kate Winslet, Hugh Grant and Alan Rickman, and so I was curious to see how the next generation would carry the torch. In this new rendition led by Daisy Edgar-Jones, I found something so passionate it bordered on violence, and reminded me of the singularity of this Austen work in that rather than put romance at the center of the plot, it's an ode to sisterhood. Focus FeaturesFor the uninitiated Austenites, Sense and Sensibility follows Elinor and Marianne Dashwood, who, after their father's death, are consigned to a life of genteel poverty.
